Happy September long weekend! 🍂

Long weekends can be busy in emergency medicine, and we know there’s nothing easy about waiting when you’re worried about your pet.

When you arrive, every patient is triaged. This means the most critical patients are seen first, rather than simply in the order they arrive.

A pet in respiratory distress, actively seizing, experiencing significant trauma or bleeding, or who has collapsed may need our team immediately — even if they arrived after your pet. Triage can also change as we go, which is why we continue to reassess when needed.

Please know that waiting doesn’t mean you’ve been forgotten. We care about every client and pet entering our doors!

We do our best to keep you updated along the way, and we’re always working toward making communication with our clients as open as possible. If while you’re waiting, please feel free to also talk to us. If something changes, your pet seems worse, or you’re becoming more concerned, let our team know. We want to hear from you and can reassess your pet at any time!

Our emergency team is here 24/7 throughout the September long weekend, caring for the pets and families who need us.

Thank you for your patience, your kindness, and for trusting us with your pets. We hope you have a wonderful long weekend!

A special piece of our clinic history-and our continued work today!
In 2024, Cedarwood Veterinary and Animal Emergency Hospital recognized 25 years of commitment and support to the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre Breeding Program, and we are proud that our relationship continues today.
The program carefully breeds and raises
German Shepherds with the health, temperament, and working ability needed for police service. Our team is honoured to contribute to the care and well-being of these remarkable dogs as they begin their journeys.

Cedarwood is proud to be a host of the Canadian Animal Blood Bank as they search for canine blood donors!

Just like people, dogs can require blood transfusions during emergencies, surgeries, and treatment for serious illnesses. Having donated blood available can make a life-saving difference for dogs when they need it most—and we are so grateful to be able to support this important program right here at our clinic.

Potential donors should be:

❤️ Over 25 kg (50 lb)
❤️ Between 1 and 8 years old
❤️ Up to date on vaccinations

One donation can help save multiple lives. Your dog could be the hero another family is hoping for!

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day

Today, we remember the pets who are no longer by our side, but whose place in our families is never forgotten.

Our patients and their families mean so much to us. We’re fortunate to be trusted with their care — sometimes from their very first visits, through years of check-ups and adventures, and sometimes during the most difficult moments.

When the time comes to say goodbye, we know we aren’t just saying goodbye to a patient. We’re helping a family say goodbye to someone they love.

To every family missing a beloved companion today, we remember them with you.

If you’d like, please share their name or a favourite photo in the comments. We would be honoured to remember them alongside you.

A little look inside our ICU!

For some of our sickest patients, something as simple as breathing can take a lot of work. That’s where our oxygen chamber comes in.

The chamber allows us to provide supplemental oxygen in a quiet, controlled environment while minimizing unnecessary handling and stress — especially important for patients who are already struggling to breathe.

Oxygen support may be used for patients experiencing respiratory distress, pneumonia, heart disease, asthma, trauma, or while recovering from certain emergencies.

It’s just one of the many tools our team has available to support hospitalized and emergency patients when they need us most.

What does an underwater treadmill do?

You may have seen our underwater treadmill at our clinic, but what is it actually used for?

Walking in water allows pets to exercise while the buoyancy helps support their body and reduce the impact on their joints. This gives them an opportunity to work on strength, mobility and overall function in a controlled environment.

Underwater treadmill therapy can be helpful for:

Senior pets with ongoing orthopedic concerns

Pets recovering from orthopedic or neurological injuries

Recovery following neck, back or limb surgery

Working and athletic dogs

Overweight pets working on mobility and conditioning

Our rehabilitation team works with each patient to develop an individualized plan based on their specific needs, with the goal of reducing pain, rebuilding strength and improving function!

How precious are they!! ♥️ This adorable little duo came in for their first wellness examinations!

These stars are a simple way to celebrate patients who have done an excellent job during their examination ♥️ Whether they sat bravely for their check-up or simply tried their very best despite feeling a little nervous, they’ve earned their gold star. 🌟

These positive early experiences help your puppy become comfortable with veterinary visits, creating less stressful appointments throughout their life!

Need a prescription refill?

We’re always happy to help with prescription refills! To help make the process as smooth as possible, we recommend calling at least 48-72 hours in advance, before your pet runs out of medication.

When you call, having your pet’s name, your last name, and the medication name ready helps us process your request as quickly as possible.

Did you know prescription refills are not always immediate?

Every refill needs to be reviewed and approved by one of our veterinarians, and some medications require an exam or bloodwork before they can be prescribed again. This helps us make sure your pet is receiving the safest and most appropriate care!

If you know your pet is running low, giving us a little extra notice allows our team time to review your request, prepare your medication, and contact you if we need any additional information.

Thank you for your patience, kindness, and understanding. Your support allows us to give every patient the careful attention they deserve, and we truly appreciate it!
