I sharpen a lot of cheap knives and I sharpen a lot of expensive knives. At this point, I can say with certainty, you definitely get what you pay for. My advice, start with one good chef/utility knife.

Steel matters. I could bore you for hours, but a reasonably good steel that won’t totally break the bank is VG10.

Thanks for your business ❤️🔪

(See last post for context)

This is CTS-Maxamet, third hardest blade steel on earth. If you’re a knife nerd, you know how daunting this stuff is, even with diamond stones…

The new Tormek stone ate through it without hesitation.. I’m impressed 😂🔥

Will be making a video of the full sharpen

I wouldn’t say it happens often, but once in a while, something happens that restores my faith in humanity. Sometimes it’s something small, sometimes not so small…

A customer, who I can’t thank enough, bought me a $400 Tormek stone. I’m still in disbelief, lol. This isn’t just any old stone… This stone in particular will cut any super steel on the market with ease, and will even cut tungsten carbide. To my knowledge, the only other abrasive capable of this is diamond.

Backstory: This fine young gentleman recently dropped off a bag of knives for sharpening. In the bag was a limited production Spyderco Manix 2 in Bohler M390 steel. If you know anything about steel, you’ll know some steels are very hard and require special abrasives to sharpen. I told him “Unfortunately, I’m unable to sharpen the M390 Manix. Simply put, the blade is harder than the abrasive I currently use.”

About a week later he reached out.. we had a short conversation, and he ended up ordering Tormek’s SB-250 Blackstone Silicon. Needless to say, he gets free sharpens for life 😂❤️

From the bottom of my heart, thank you Orrin MacIntosh. You’re a hell of a guy.

Okay, so this is a pull-through sharpener. I’m sure most of you are familiar. Little carbide teeth in the shape of a V, and you drag 🤢 your kn!fe through to remove steel.

I can’t stress this next part enough… If you have one, THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE! I don’t care what brand it is, who sold it to you, or what you heard. I’ve done sooo many repairs, and the infamous pull-through sharpener always seems to be the culprit. Completely destroys your kn!ves.

ALTERNATIVE: Buy a leather strop. Even a cheap one on Amazon, $10-$15 (see comments). They’re fairly easy to learn, and you can essentially keep your kn!ves sharp forever with proper use. Most of them will come with a little stick of green compound. That’s aluminum oxide, and works fine for softer steels. If you wanna get fancy, you can buy a wood-backed strop, or better yet, a paddle strop, and DMT (diamond abrasive) compound, but it gets expensive quick. My recommendation would just be the cheaper one.

Edit: a strop can’t be used to make a dull kn!fe sharp. A strop will KEEP a sharp kn!fe sharp.

I’m off to Mexico in the morning. Will be back on the 14th. Thank you for your business ❤️❤️❤️🔪✈️🌴

When buying kn!ves, pay attention to the steel. Legitimate kn!fe manufacturers will stamp, etch or engrave the steel composition on the blade. If they don't, it's because it’s poor quality and they don't want the target buyers to know.

There's only one exception to this that I’m aware, and that’s Morakniv. Mora makes decent, well-priced kn!ves using two main steels, 1095 (which they call carbon) and Sandvik 14C28N (which they call stainless). For the price, these are 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I can't stress this enough. There's a s**t load of companies (like Huusk Japan, link in comments) who buy extremely low quality kn!ves in bulk, stamp a brand name on them, spend a few grand on marketing, and upsell them as premium. People are out here spending $150+ on $5 kn!ves. Don't fall for it.

So I’ve kinda been having a hard time keeping up with everything during the week. Trying to juggle a career and a business doesn’t leave me with much spare time in my schedule. Success is sometimes a blessing and a curse.

So if you need kn!ves sharpened, keep in mind that weekends work best for me. Thanks for your business. Means the world ❤️🔪

Decided to start posting more educational stuff, cuz lately, I seem to be getting the same questions over and over… especially when I start telling people how much some of my knives are worth

“Why the hell would a knife cost more than $100. What a ripoff”

In some cases, yes, total ripoff. In other cases, $1000+ is a hell of a deal (yes that’s a thousand. Not a typo)
