Jade Fountain from Animal Behaviour Matters will be delivering a series of three evening seminars and workshops in Vancouver Island, May 27-29 2026.
Contact Karen at [email protected] for registration!
May 27 - Scent, Science, Welfare | 4:30pm - 9:00pm
This workshop will investigate the science behind scent-based activities, their impact on canine welfare and wellbeing, and how handlers influence the search. The seminar will examine body language and behaviour in scent work, address common myths, and highlight how scent enrichment can be used to enhance dogs’ lives. Both scent work and enrichment involving odour will be explored. Jade will discuss the research undertaken in her PhD in scent work.
May 28 - Trainer Skill Building | 4:30pm - 9:00pm
Mechanical skills are learned abilities that can be developed through practice and are essential for effective use of positive reinforcement in training. In this interactive workshop, participants will work with a partner to build core skills such as timing, reinforcement delivery, and shaping, while applying key principles of learning. The session also offers insight into the training process from both the learner’s and the teacher’s perspective.
Whether you work with goldfish, llamas, dogs or humans, practicing skill sets with tabletop games is beneficial for furthering your training, timing and observational skills.
May 29 - Cooperative Care | 4:30pm - 9:00pm
This seminar introduces the principles of cooperative care, exploring the key components for success in training dogs for voluntary participation in veterinary care and daily husbandry. It covers practical behaviours such as chin rests, nail trims, hind leg presents, mouth inspections, pill taking, and injection training. The session also delves into target and station training, along with settle and relaxation skills, and highlights the importance of agency, choice, and consent in building positive, low-stress interactions with dogs. This presentation will help improve vet and grooming daily care such as trimming nails, using brushes and clippers or dremmels, preparing for eye or ear drops - and help build dog confidence with everyday care.
