Today Dr Green performed a surgical correction for a calf with a re**al prolapse. The prolapse has been repaired, and the calf is recovering under pain control and supportive care. Thanks to prompt veterinary attention, this calf has a much better chance for a full recovery and a comfortable life.
What is a re**al prolapse?
Re**al prolapse occurs when part of the re**al wall protrudes through the a**s. It can range from a small, easily replaced segment to a large, swollen mass of tissue. Causes include straining from diarrhea, coughing, difficult births, or irritants in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Left untreated, the exposed tissue can become swollen, damaged, or infected.
Why surgical correction is important:
Protects the tissue - exposed re**al mucosa is vulnerable to swelling, trauma, and infection; surgery restores normal anatomy and blood flow.
Prevents recurrence - surgical techniques (purse‑string, mucosal resection, or more advanced repairs) reduce the chance the prolapse will happen again.
Addresses underlying problems - surgery allows the veterinarian to evaluate and treat contributing causes such as severe diarrhea or tail injuries.
