The Peace of Wild Things

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Melons!!!! Cantaloupe ready, and many many more coming. Honeydew is close. Path in our patch carved out so those ones in the middle no longer hide on us. The smell and taste is late summer intoxication.

Farm stand stocked regularly, you can get some at the central and Powell river markets this weekend, or be front of the line and order on the blueberry commons online farm store: the weekly shopping opens Sat until Tuesday night, delivery or pick up on a Friday.

For a small fee we deliver to Lang bay in the south and to Lund and there’s even a pick up at Savary island! So if you order today it’ll be ready for you to pick up or deliver on Friday. How cool is that!

Check out our bulk buy section of the store to stock up on our bonanza of tomatoes, peppers, basil, beans etc for canning, freezing or big meal preparations.

IT'S TOMATO TIME!!!!

We have an incredible crop of field tomatoes coming on - perhaps our best in several years! We have a massive number of very large Roma type -"Plum Regal" and an equal abundance of large and medium slicers - "Iron Lady" and "Defiant."

Both of these types are great for preserving. I think a combination of the two types is best for sauces, salsas or whole tomatoes. If you are wanting to fill your shelves and your freezer for the coming months, it is TIME TO PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW!

We have a bulk ordering option on our website here: https://blueberry-commons.localline.ca/bulk

Smaller amounts can be found in our farm stand everyday at 6616 King Avenue - end of King!

Enjoy!!

FARM U-PICK THIS SATURDAY 10:00AM TO 3:00 PM!!

Join us for our once monthly full farm U-Pick! This is a family friendly event where you can come onto the farm, see how things grow and harvest what you need for the week, the month or for the fall and winter!

It's a great time to be on the farm as there is a great diversity of crops: basil, beets, chard, gale, lettuce, onions, garlic, zucchini, several types of winter squash, corn, peppers, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, tulsi, cabbage, ... and maybe even a melon or two!

There is no fee to enter. You pay for what you pick. There will be folks on hand to help you make a good selection. Park on the street at the very end of King avenue and follow the signs!

I have to admit, I've always been a bit of a squash snob, especially when it comes to spaghetti squash! "Any gourd that requires sauces and flavourings to taste good has no business calling itself a squash" I have been known to say. give me a delicata, kabocha or Blue Hubbard - now there's a squash!

That is, until yesterday when my culinarily gifted partner cooked up one of our "Orangetti" spaghetti squash for dinner. My first reaction was, "wow - this has a gorgeous orange colour on the inside too - not like most bland looking spaghetti squash." Then I tasted it - it actually had flavour!!

So Laura cooked it up with a cheese sauce and herbs and meatballs. I had a second helping last night. I had it for lunch today. And I am havonig it for dnner tonight - AMAZING!!

And fortunately for YOU, we have scads of this spaghetti squash in the farm stand, curing in the mini greenhouse and still out in the field. They came early and they came in numbers!

Try one - they are much better than the average bland spaghetti squash. Who knows, you might become a convert like me!

How happy is farmer Ron, with a few firsts today!
Cantaloupe, basketball sized watermelon, and gorgeous Hubbard squash. The watermelon is just a teeny bit early, but still so delicious and juicy. Slices going to the Savary market tomorrow!

We’ve been into the harvest these days. Some crops peaking (kale, chard, peas, cherry tomatoes, apples), many just getting going (field tomatoes, pole beans, eggplant, spaghetti and acorn squash, next round of carrots and beets), a few very nearly there (corn! and raspberries!).

Here’s some fun and unique things we just harvested:
lobster mushrooms - meaty, slight seafood flavour, great in chowder, as a frittata, or sautéed with butter and garlic (almost everything tastes better with these 2 in my opinion!)
Boysenberries - a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry and a loganberry (which is a cross between a blackberry and raspberry…) they’re black and juicy like blackberry, sweet and tangy like raspberry.

If there are still pints left, you’ll find these in the farm stand (open every day at the end of King Ave) and at the central farmers market until 1pm today!

A few images highlighting what’s going on in the field, and our one field sunflower, and volunteer to greet you at the farm stand. More sunny flowers are coming!

First eggplant of the season! Plus peas, beans, figs, all the greens, squash, tomatoes, peppers onions garlic and so much more!!! Open everyday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm!!
