🐈 National Feral Cat Day 🐈

Not every cat you see outdoors is a stray — so what's the difference?

🐾 Feral cats have had little or no positive human interaction and are generally fearful of people. They may live their entire lives outdoors and are often best supported through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs.

🐾 Stray cats are cats who have been socialized to people but are currently living outdoors. They may have been lost or separated from their family and may still be comfortable approaching people.

🐾 Abandoned cats are pets who have been intentionally left behind by their owners. Unlike truly feral cats, abandoned cats may be socialized to people but suddenly find themselves without a home.

❤️ If you come across a cat outdoors, don't assume they have been abandoned. Look for identification, ask around, and contact local animal services or rescue organizations for guidance.

And for community cats, TNR — trapping, spaying/neutering, vaccinating, and returning them to their territory — can help reduce unwanted litters and support healthier, more stable colonies.

Every cat deserves compassion, whether they curl up on your couch or prefer to keep their distance. 🐾

💚 World Mental Health Day — October 10 💚

Who takes care of the people who take care of our animals? 🐾

Veterinary medicine is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. Today, we’re taking a moment to recognize the veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, receptionists, and students who dedicate themselves to caring for animals and their families.

We also want to highlight NOMV — Not One More Vet, an organization providing mental-health education, peer support, and resources specifically for the veterinary community.

💚 Your mental health matters, too.

Let's remember to check in with ourselves, our coworkers, and the people around us. A little kindness and support can make a difference.

🐾❤️ Happy World Animal Day! ❤️🐾

October 4 is World Animal Day — a day to celebrate the incredible relationship we share with animals and to recognize the many ways they enrich our lives.

From the pets who greet us at the door, to the wildlife we share our communities with, animals play an important part in our world. World Animal Day is also an opportunity to raise awareness about animal welfare and encourage us to do what we can to make life better for animals. 🌎🐾

As a veterinary team, we get to see that special human-animal bond every day. We see the worried faces, the happy reunions, the wagging tails, the purrs, and all the little moments that remind us just how much our animals mean to us.

Today, take a moment to celebrate the animals in your life — and maybe give them an extra treat, a little longer walk, or an extra-big cuddle. ❤️

Because a world that cares for animals is a better world for all of us. 🐶🐱🐰🐴🦎🐾

🍄 Is That Mushroom Safe? 🐶

Fall means cooler walks, colourful leaves… and mushrooms popping up in yards, parks, and along trails.

While most mushrooms aren't toxic, some can cause serious illness or even be life-threatening to dogs. And unfortunately, it isn't always possible to tell a safe mushroom from a dangerous one just by looking at it.

🐾 If your dog finds a mushroom:
• Don't let them eat it!
• Keep an eye on what they've picked up on walks.
• Check your yard regularly and remove mushrooms you find.
• If your pet eats an unknown mushroom, contact your veterinarian right away. Don't wait for symptoms to appear.

Signs of mushroom poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, weakness, tremors, seizures, or changes in behaviour — and some toxins can cause delayed symptoms.

📸 If your pet eats a mushroom, take a photo or, if it's safe to do so, bring a sample with you. This may help with identification.

🍄 When it comes to wild mushrooms, if you don't know what it is, don't let your pet eat it!
