We are almost there…horses are almost out full time on pasture, annual vet visits are wrapped up and there’s still hay leftover in the barn.
I wish enjoyed spring as much as everyone rooting around in their gardens and laying around like a teen who’s only worried about the UV rating each day but spring is probably my least favorite season and I blame horse husbandry for that!
Spring brings fences that need repair, paddock scraping, moving horses around to get them with new buddies who they’ll be with for summer because some can’t do grass and others can, medical visits to boost everything before the bugs arrive, longer farrier visits to put shoes on those competing or those who’s feet we gave a break over the winter and allowed to be barefoot, worries about sugars in grass and weaning onto pasture which takes FOREVER it feels AND it seems like all of these things have to happen in a very short window. I’m super fortunate to have amazing help for these tasks but it’s still so time consuming.
But…then I look out and see horses who I think really do appreciate everything that’s done for them even though they can’t verbalize it. At least that’s what I tell myself to get through January to June…anyone else?
