𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁, 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 💡

Imagine you’ve already made it into bed and suddenly remember the light is still on. That’s when a very good dog can save the day by turning it off for you. A task like that is such a handy example of how service dogs can learn practical household skills that make everyday life easier and smoother.

The key is to teach the behaviour safely and clearly, usually by first building a target and then transferring that cue to the switch. It’s one of those fun skills that looks simple from the outside but really takes thoughtful training, repetition, and generalization so the dog can do it reliably in the real world.

Honestly, a dog who can turn the lights off is peak “I got you” energy. Very domestic hero, very efficient, very appreciated when you’re too comfy to get back out of bed.

𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 🚗🛳✈️️

Travel with a service dog is easier when the basics already hold up everywhere. If sit, down, settle, leave it, and focus only on work in one perfect little bubble at home, vacation is going to expose that real fast. The goal is a dog whose skills generalize to new places, new noises, and new chaos, so travel feels like a smooth plan rather than a training emergency.

That’s why travel prep is really just proofing in a fancy outfit. You build the behaviour in quieter spaces first, then layer in airports, stations, hotels, restaurants, and all the weird moving parts that come with being away from home.

A solid travel dog is not lucky, it’s trained. And the more the basics hold up everywhere, the less the whole trip turns into a “why is my dog acting brand new?” situation.

𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆, 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗴 🐶

Giving puppies as much socialization and exposure as possible is how you build confidence before the world gets weird and loud and full of opinions. New people, new places, new surfaces, new sounds, done thoughtfully, these little experiences teach a puppy that the world is safe enough to explore.

It’s not about forcing greetings or flooding them with chaos. It’s about controlled, positive exposure so they can observe, recover, and learn that new things are no big deal. That’s what helps create a dog who can handle life with a little more bravery and a lot less drama.

The earlier and more consistently you do it, the better those experiences stick. Tiny confidence wins in puppyhood can turn into a dog who walks into the world thinking, “Oh, this again? I’ve got this.”

𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 🏖️

Summer vacation doesn’t pause service dog training. The beach trips, road trips, and extra ice cream stops are fun, but the work still has to happen in small, smart ways so the dog keeps their skills sharp.

That might mean practicing settles in a hotel lobby, calm behaviour around travel days, or keeping routines steady enough that the dog doesn’t come home acting like they forgot their whole education. A good trip includes training, rest, enrichment, and plenty of chances to decompress so the dog stays happy and functional.

So yes, enjoy summer, but don’t ghost the training plan. The best teams are built by keeping the skills alive even when the calendar says “vacation.”

𝗜𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁 🍦☀️

Hot weather calls for cool choices, and the best puppy behaviour might just be sitting pretty while the humans get ice cream for them and for me. A calm sit-and-wait teaches impulse control, helps dogs practice patience around food, and keeps the whole outing from turning into a sticky little spectacle.

On extra warm days, it’s also a smart way to keep things low-key while everyone gets a treat and a break from the heat. Dogs should be kept cool, watered, and out of the hottest parts of the day, so a quick ice cream stop with a good settle can feel like the perfect summer win.

So yes, bring the pup, order the cone, and admire the dog that can sit there like a tiny professional while the humans handle dessert duties. That’s top-tier summer manners.

𝗕𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺

Train yourself to be the most rewarding thing in the room. If your dog thinks you are where the good stuff happens, you’ve already won half the battle. Positive reinforcement works because dogs repeat what pays off, so your timing, your energy, and your rewards need to be more exciting than the environment.

That doesn’t mean bribing your dog with whatever is in your pocket. It means finding what your dog actually values, treats, toys, praise, play, or all of the above, and using it with purpose so the dog wants to stay engaged with you even when the world is doing the most.

For service dogs and public access work, this skill is gold. When the handler becomes the best part of the room, the dog is more likely to choose focus, connection, and good behavior over distractions, which makes training feel a whole lot less like a tug-of-war.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗽 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽: 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ⛴️

Last weekend, our advanced dogs got a special outing and took the Aquabus over to Granville Island, and honestly, they were all perfect. Calm boarding, lovely settles, great focus, and zero drama. Just a bunch of very good dogs treating a water taxi like it was no big deal.

Public outings like this are such a great chance to practice real-world skills: riding calmly, ignoring distractions, and staying connected to their handlers while the world keeps moving around them. Granville Island and the Aquabus are both dog-friendly, which made the whole adventure even better for a training day that felt more like a fun field trip than “work.”

We love seeing advanced dogs get to show off how far they’ve come, especially when they can handle a new environment with that much ease and confidence. Big cheers to every dog on board, they absolutely nailed it.

𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗢𝗻, 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗢𝗻 🦮🆚🐕

Just because a dog has a job doesn’t mean it stops being a dog. When the vest comes off, the goofy starts rolling in; sniffing, zoomies, toy crimes, and all. That balance is part of what keeps working dogs happy, healthy, and ready to clock back in when it’s time.

Service dogs especially need off-duty time to play, decompress, and enjoy life like any other pup. Work is important, but so is letting them be ridiculous with a toy or melt into a nap like they pay rent.

So yes, they can be professional in public and totally feral about a squeaky ball at home. Both are true, and both are adorable.

🎬🐾 Movie Training Success!

We took training to the big screen this week with a special outing to Landmark Cinemas, where our advanced and graduate teams watched The Sheep Detectives together!

Between the booming surround sound, busy lobby, and all the excitement of a real theatre environment, these dogs absolutely rose to the occasion. From calm settles during the movie to staying focused through distractions (and popcorn smells 🍿), we were blown away by their behavior.
Moments like this are what training is all about — building real-world skills and confidence for both dogs and handlers. We’re so proud of every team who joined us!

A huge thank you to Landmark Cinemas for welcoming us and supporting owner-trained service dog teams. Opportunities like this truly make an impact 💛
