𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗩𝗧?

There are many different types of appointments that can be booked with our knowledgeable and skilled RVTs.

𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀
If your pet is healthy, you have no concerns and have a valid VCPR (vet client patient relationship) their annual vaccines can be booked with an RVT. The RVT will perform a full physical exam, if any concerns arise they will consult a veterinarian. They can discuss things like diet, weight loss, puppy training, dental health, parasite prevention and routine wellness. They will then vaccinate your pet with the appropriate vaccines.

Therapeutic Laser
Our RVTs are all trained on our class 4 therapeutic laser. They perform treatments for post-surgical patients, pain associated with injury or arthritis, and even medical cases such as large wounds and ear infections. Laser can be performed on any species but most common is horses, dogs & cats.

Bodywork
We have 1 specially trained RVT in equine body work and soon to be 2 trained in canine body work!

Injections & Training
If your pet needs a monthly injection for arthritis or allergies, your appointment will be scheduled with an RVT. They can also train you on how to perform injections at home such as these, insulin injections or subcutaneous fluids.

Nail Trims & Other Grooming
If you are unable to trim your own pets nails and they need to come to the clinic for that procedure, it would be our RVTs taking care of that. Sometimes a pet may require a full sedation in order to safely trim their nails, in this case it would be taken care of by 2 RVTs (under supervision of a veterinarian) - one to monitor anesthesia and one to trim nails. The same goes for cats who need full sedation for their annual hair cut, one RVT will monitor the anesthesia and one RVT will shave the cat.

Neonatal Care
Whether it's a calf that is feeling under the weather and needs to be tube fed or have an IV placed, or an orphaned kitten that is fading and needs round the clock monitoring - our experienced RVTs have that handled. They can also provide training for owners, farmers or fosters to tube feed on their own as well as educate on signs to watch for and when it becomes an emergency and vet care is needed.

This is not a complete list of all the appointments run by our RVTs, but gives you an idea of when you may be booked with one if you call for an appointment.

Some procedures can be performed by an RVT without supervision by a veterinarian while some procedures require direct supervision or specialized training.

Our RVTs can;
- trim hooves
- clean sheaths
- apply and remove bandages and splints
- perform semen collection
- assist with birthing
- perform equine dental float
- provide resuscitation and nursing care to neonates
- perform necropsy procedures
- perform pregnancy detection by ultrasound in beef cattle and small ruminants

- monitor anesthesia for equine & bovine procedures (castration, hernia repair, etc)
- help set up vaccination protocols for beef and dairy herds

Did you know that our RVTs play a vital role when your pet comes for surgery? Here's a list of all the duties they perform to make sure your pet is safe and happy during their surgery.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
The RVT will go over the consent form prior to surgery and anesthesia, they will explain any options such as IV fluids & pre-anesthetic blood work. They will answer any questions you may have an obtain informed consent to proceed with the procedure.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗼𝗽 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸
Before your pet undergoes anesthesia, it is important to ensure their vitals are within normal limits. RVTs check their temperature, pulse, respiration, mucous membrane color & hydration status - reporting any abnormals to the veterinarian.

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Using the clinics' standard protocol and discussing with the veterinarian, the RVTs do all the calculations for drugs that your pet will need while here for surgery. This includes - sedation, induction, local anesthesia, pain management and meds to go home if indicated. They also draw up all these medications to be ready for surgery.

𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽
When it is your patients' turn for surgery, the RVT will give them their sedation via intramuscular injection. After 10 minutes they will bring your pet out and place an IV catheter. They will give an induction agent intravenously and then place an endotracheal tube in your pets throat. They will then shave and aseptically prep the surgery site while another RVT monitors the patients vitals under anesthesia.

𝗔𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴
The entire time your pet is under anesthesia for any procedure, their vitals are monitored by an RVT. Every 5 minutes they record values such as heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure, anesthetic level and IV fluid rate.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗼𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆
Once your pet is finished their procedure, the RVT monitors them until they are full awake. They extubate (take the breathing tube out) at an appropriate time, they continue to monitor vitals and they are prepared to administer extra medications if your pet wakes up in a fractious manner. After the surgery is done and the patient is awake, they perform all the billing details, prepare the aftercare instructions and get prescriptions ready to go home.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗩𝗧

To become a Registered Veterinary Technologist in Alberta, an individual must graduate from a CVMA (Canadian Veterinary Medical Association) or AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) accredited college technology program, successfully complete the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and apply to the ABVMA for registration.

Graduates from non-accredited veterinary technology programs may qualify for registration upon successful completion of an assessment that has been established by the ABVMA and the ABVTA.

There are 3 colleges in Alberta that offer a diploma in Veterinary Technology.
- Lakeland College
- Olds College
- NAIT

Entrance requirements vary slightly between colleges, but generally include:
A Grade 12 diploma,
Courses in Math, English, Chemistry, and Biology
Related experience, such as volunteering at a veterinary clinic or working on a farm.

In the veterinary technology programs above, students will learn important skills such as animal handling, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic imaging, diagnostic laboratory procedures, surgical preparation, anesthesia, dentistry and animal diseases.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗩𝗧?

An RVT, or Registered Veterinary Technologist, is a highly trained individual who has completed an accredited program of study in Animal Health Technology or Veterinary Technology. They are well-versed in many areas of veterinary medicine including anesthesia, nutrition, animal behaviour, diagnostic laboratory testing, radiography, emergency medicine, and public education.

RVTs are an integral part of the veterinary team and work together with veterinarians to provide patient care, diagnostics, and treatment services.

RVTs work in vet clinics as well as other animal and welfare-related areas such as:

Research institutions
Government services
Pharmaceuticals and medical supplies
Zoos
Educational institutions
Feedlot operations
Humane societies and law enforcement
Equine training facilities
Ranching and dairy operations

Technologists also have the opportunity to become highly trained in special skills such as rehabilitative therapy, dentistry, anesthesia, emergency medicine or other recognized veterinary technologist specialty (VTS) fields and advanced training programs.

Meet Everest 🏔️ a 5 month old miniature horse mix.

A few weeks ago Everest started to develop a fever, diarrhea and lethargy. Dr. Maya and RVT Eden rushed out to help little Everest as dehydration can be critical. They ran some bloodwork, hooked him up to IV fluids and started medication. With the careful monitoring of his owner, Everest has made a full recovery and is back to racing around his field.

Did you know that rabbits and other pocket pets need nail trims just like cats and dogs? If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, our trained RVTs can!

Molly the rabbit came in yesterday and had her nails trimmed by RVTs Claire & Ashley.

When emergencies happen during regular clinic hours, it's all hands on deck! On Friday afternoon we welcomed these 4 healthy toy poodle puppies via c-section after her labor had stalled.

If you are breeding or have a pregnant dog it is important to know what signs to look for and when to call your veterinarian or head to an emergency clinic during labor and delivery.
