This is how I prefer to freeze my birds for taxidermy. Head on the back, nothing sticking out, and into plastic bags for the longest freezer life ... just be sure the bag is large enough not to damage the tail feathers. It is also a good idea to write on a piece of paper your name, and the number off your migratory bird permit the bird was taken under, and place it in the bag with the bird ... this infor is needed for a year end report the CWS makes us do for every bird dropped off.

Sharing back to the top as I do each year to try to help hunters with what to look for in a fully plumed wood duck. Wood ducks make poor mounts when not well plumed, and are likely the most difficult duck in our area to make look good in a mount.

Hello to all who follow. It has been a trying last couple of years, but things are improving now. Spring of 2025 I bought a new location after a lot of hassles and difficulties getting the purchase done. Then came the clean up, sort and move of 57 years of personal accumulation and business materials, and that was a colossal feat to accomplish, mostly on my own, and during a time of significant to severe pain due to a health issue. After that, the old location needed to be prepared and listed to sell. Markets were poor, and it took nearly a year to get an acceptable offer and eventually close the sale after many hassles and extensions creating another immense amount of work honouring the conditions of the sale, and again, during a time of significant pain. During that year it was more time consuming than expected dealing with the maintenance of three buildings. The sale is finally done, and I am finally able to work on the health problems and be able to get my life and new house back in order. There has been recent improvement on all fronts hopefully leaving many of the problems behind me. All this has caused me to get even farther behind in the taxidermy work than I already was when all this started … I have slowed my intake in the last 18 months until I got past life’s huge interruptions, but am presently still working on birds from over two years ago … but in front of me is now a shorter list which I hope to get through by spring or so. I can now start taking in more pieces, but will still limit some species or poses in order to not allow my backlog to get out of hand again. I am hoping to be able to work on taxidermy more regular from now on. I am very sorry to those whose birds I presently have in my freezer and have taken much longer than I should to get them mounted for return. There has also been some issues with my phone. I ported out my old landline number to a cell phone, but my new location has very poor cell reception for calls and it seems some phone messages did not come through properly … but I do seem to get texts fine … so my old number of (613)476-7981 can be texted and I will get that message fine. Thank you all for your patience … I will get working on shortening the list and hopefully maintain my quality for years to come. I am now located near Adolphustown between the town and the ferry, 35kms from Napanee, and 50kms from Kingston. Thanks, Steve Dingman.

A drake canvasback finished and ready to return. This bird was taken in October, which poses a big task for any taxidermist since a canvasback tends not to plume in until near Christmas ... dealing with pin feathers and limited plumage is always a task and we do our best to hide deficiencies and show what is best on the bird. I understand wanting the mount of a species we don't often get, no matter the time of year we can get it.

A drake common goldeneye finished up. The client was notified today it was done, and a couple hours later he was here to pick up ... the kind of client every taxidermist likes.

Here are pics of the other 4 old squaw mounts for the same group of hunters, one for each of them ... one swimmer and three flyers. My favorite is still the swimming pose.
