🎉🐾 Excitement Isn’t the Problem! 🐾🎉

Does your dog completely lose their mind when they see you pick up the leash? 🦮

Bounce around like a kangaroo when company arrives? 👋

Get SO excited when their favourite toy comes out that they can barely contain themselves? 🎾😂

Sound familiar?

Here’s something important to remember: Excitement isn’t necessarily a problem that needs to be fixed! 💙

Excitement is a perfectly normal emotion, and our dogs should be able to enjoy the things that make them happy!

The challenge comes when that excitement makes it difficult for them to listen, think clearly, or make appropriate choices. 🧠🐶

Instead of asking:

❌ “How do I stop my dog from getting so excited?”

Try asking:

✅ “What would I like my dog to DO when they’re excited?”

Maybe that looks like:

🐾 Keeping four paws on the floor when greeting visitors
🛏️ Going to their bed when someone comes to the door
👀 Checking in with you when something exciting catches their attention
🚪 Pausing before rushing through an open doorway
🎾 Waiting for a release cue before chasing their favourite toy
🐕 Walking with you instead of pulling toward something interesting

But here’s the important part…

We need to teach these skills BEFORE expecting our dogs to use them in highly exciting situations! 🎯

Start in a quiet environment where your dog can be successful. Practice the behaviour, reward those small wins, and gradually introduce more excitement and distractions as their skills develop.

And remember, if your dog is struggling, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re being stubborn or choosing not to listen.

They may simply be too excited to successfully perform that skill at their current level of training.

That’s valuable information! 💡

Take a step back, make things a little easier, and give them another opportunity to succeed.

✨ Impulse control isn’t about suppressing excitement. It’s about teaching dogs what to DO with that excitement!

We don’t need to take away their enthusiasm, their joy, or those wonderfully goofy personalities we love so much. 🥰🐶

We just want to help them develop the skills to navigate exciting moments successfully.

The equipment has been moved in, the sand has been freshly harrowed, and The Arch is ready for an afternoon of agility fun! Thank you to all who helped moved equipment, we appreciate your muscles.🐕💨

We’re all set and excited to welcome everyone for one final Fun Match of the season!

🍂 Whether you’re working on your skills, building confidence, or simply enjoying some ring time with your dog, we’re looking forward to a fantastic afternoon filled with teamwork, encouragement, and plenty of fun!

📣 MEET THE TEAM: This is Shaelyn 📣

Shaelyn is an agility instructor at Paus-N-Train who loves being part of the journey that helps dogs and their handlers become a team. Outside of Paus-n-Train, she works full-time as a wedding photographer. She spends her days either capturing special moments behind a camera or helping dogs and their people learn new skills!

At home, Shaelyn has three dogs who keep life interesting: Kida, a rescue mix, Koda, a rescue pug, and her puppy Sól, a Border Collie. Her dogs are a huge part of her world, and you’ll rarely catch her without them!

Shaelyn is happiest when she can get outside, spend time with friends, and enjoy a little adventure with her dogs. Whether she’s hiking, training, or simply spending time with the people and dogs she loves, she enjoys making the most of her time away from work.

This past year brought some exciting accomplishments for Shaelyn and Kida, earning 5th overall at AAC Regionals and 1st place overall in Speedstakes at the PHD UKI Winter Cup! These are achievements she’s incredibly proud of and a reminder of what consistent training and teamwork can achieve.

One of Shaelyn’s biggest bucket-list dreams is to make it onto an international agility team! While that’s a big goal, she’s excited to keep learning, improving, and seeing where the sport takes her.

Her favourite part of instructing at Paus-N-Train is helping handlers develop a genuine connection with their dogs. She loves seeing a team begin to understand one another, build confidence, and work through challenges together. Every dog and handler is different, and being able to help each team find what works for them is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.

Shaelyn and Sól have spent the past year focusing on foundational skills and building the relationship they’ll carry into the agility ring. She’s excited to start trialling with Sól and see how their hard work translates into the next stage of their journey. Watching Sól grow and develop as a teammate is something she’s especially looking forward to in the coming year.

Shaelyn is excited to continue growing as an instructor, celebrating the progress of the teams she works with, and pursuing new goals with her own dogs. She feels fortunate to be part of a community that shares her passion for dog sports and can’t wait to see what the next year brings!

So glad you’re a part of our team ♥️
