To celebrate 85 years of PHS, we're sharing 85 adoption stories.

28 of 85 🐈 Rocky, Winnie, and Hailey

When my brother and I were little, we were given two of our grandmother’s cat’s kittens to grow up with us. They were such a big part of our childhood. After they peacefully passed away from old age one and two years ago, we were not sure if our hearts were ready to adopt again.

Last summer, we decided to stop by PHS just to see how it would feel. We told ourselves we were only looking. That is when we met Rocky and Winnie, formerly Springroll and Tortilla. It was love at first sight.

They are both about a year old now and we truly cannot imagine life without them. When we first met Rocky, he was as playful as could be and that has not changed one bit. He loves playing with water in the sink and bathtub, chasing toys all over the house and curling up with his doggy brother at night.

Winnie was a very shy girl at first and barely let us get close. Seeing her transformation has been so special. Now she is the most clingy and cuddly little cat, completely full of love. She adores toy springs, being held, laying on top of her humans and claiming every scratching post as her own.

Rocky and Winnie are perfect additions to our family and the best of friends. Watching their bond grow and their personalities shine has brought so much happiness back into our home. We cannot wait to keep seeing them grow and discover who they are.

We are so grateful to PHS for bringing our kitties into our lives and for giving us the chance to open our hearts again.

Meet Kaleidoscope. 🐱 She’s gorgeous, she knows it, and she’d like you to know it too.

But beyond those striking eyes is a cat who is genuinely great company. She loves being near her people, she’ll chat with you throughout the day, and she has strong feelings about catnip... strongly in favour!

She’s not a lap cat, but she’s always in the room. She’s affectionate on her own terms, which is a pretty reasonable arrangement.

Kaleidoscope is looking for a home where she can be the only cat. She doesn’t share well with other felines, and she’d rather be the centre of your world than compete for it. Her history with dogs is unknown, but she has shown interest in pups walking by her condo at the shelter, so with a slow introduction it could be a good fit.

If you’re looking for a companion with personality, beauty, and a flair for the dramatic, Kaleidoscope is ready to audition for the role. ❤️

Heads up, dog parents. 🐶

With all the rain we've been getting lately, leptospirosis risk is higher than usual, and it's something our team wants you to know about.

Lepto spreads through the urine of infected wildlife like raccoons and skunks, which finds its way into puddles and wet ground. Your dog doesn't even have to drink the water. Sniffing or walking through a contaminated area can be enough.

It can lead to kidney and liver failure, and in serious cases it can be fatal. It can also spread to humans.

We know that's a lot to hear. But the vaccine is simple, affordable, and something you can take care of right here at our clinic. If your dog's lepto vaccine isn't current, now is really the time to book.

Everything you need to know is on our blog!

Leptospirosis is rising in Peterborough. Learn how to protect your dog with vaccination and avoid exposure to this serious bacterial disease.

There's a lot of information out there about spaying and neutering, and it can feel like a lot to sort through.

We put together a blog post that covers the basics in plain language. Health benefits, what the procedures involve, and why it matters for animals in our community. No pressure, no jargon, just honest information to help you feel more confident about the decision.

The quick version is that spaying and neutering can help your pet live a healthier, calmer life. It may reduce hormone-driven behaviours like roaming or marking, but it doesn't touch who they are as an animal. Their personality, their silly habits, all of that stays the same.

And across Ontario, unplanned litters are one of the main reasons animals end up needing shelter support. Having an affordable option close to home makes a real difference, and that's a big part of why our clinic is here.

If you've been on the fence and just want some clarity before taking the next step, the post is a good place to start.

Joy, Evelyn, and Theo held a sale and raised $100 for the animals in our care. With a little help from their mom Jodie, these kids showed up for the animals in the biggest way! We are always so thrilled to see kids getting involved in animal welfare. Leave a comment to let them know how much they’re appreciated! ❤️

To celebrate 85 years of PHS, we're sharing 85 adoption stories.

27 of 85 🐶 Mac and Joenah

Mac came into my life in May 2025 and my world changed for the best! From the snuggliest of cuddles to the wettest of face licks, he is truly the light in my life. These first months have been full of adventure, from camping trips and city explorations to a Jays game and so much more enrichment along the way.

He is the sweetest, most emotionally intelligent boy, still learning to navigate sounds and sights, but he’s brave and does so well. Truly the best weighted blanket a person could ask for! Mac is a tall little man who just celebrated his first birthday on January 25th, a day full of spoils. He probably wishes it could be his birthday every day!

He’s slowly but surely growing into a fine young gentleman and I am beyond excited to watch him reach his full size and potential. I am so grateful to the Peterborough Humane Society for giving us the chance to find one another. The entire staff was more than helpful and Rachel was absolutely wonderful in making the process of getting best friends together forever!

Ticks in our area are active year-round, and a lot of the advice floating around out there is either wrong or incomplete. So we put together a guide that actually walks you through it: how to remove one safely, why you should wait four to six weeks before testing (yes, really), what symptoms to watch for in the meantime, and what prevention options are worth looking into. Share with your pet parent friends or tag them below to share the information!

Ticks are active year-round in Peterborough. Learn how to safely remove a tick, when to book a 4Dx SNAP test, and how to protect your dog at our clinic.

Thanks to all of you, we shattered our all-time record and we are still smiling about it. 🎉

The Spring 2026 PHS 50/50 Lottery reached a total jackpot of $137,510, more than doubling our previous record of $57,575. This is the biggest lottery in PHS history, and it happened because of the most incredible community we could ask for.

🏆 M. Harvey of Peterborough takes home $68,755 as our PHS 50/50 Lottery jackpot winner!
✈️ M. Fowler of Norwood wins a $5,000 travel voucher through the Marlin Travel & Collette Ruffle!

None of this would have been possible without our amazing sponsors. A huge thank you to Miskin Law Professional Corporation for coming on board as our first ever Early Bird sponsor and making it possible for us to offer two Early Bird draws for the first time in our history. Your generosity made an incredible difference. And to Marlin Travel Peterborough and Collette, thank you for making the Ruffle the most successful it has ever been and giving one lucky winner the trip of a lifetime.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward the animals at PHS, and this community has shown up for them in the most remarkable way. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. 🐾
