To celebrate 85 years of PHS, we're sharing 85 adoption stories.

52 of 85 🐶Mike Wazowski and Jessica

Mike Wazowski joined our family in July 2024, several months after being found as a stray. Even though we had several visits with him and Tilly, a St. Bernard mix and PHS alum, before bringing him home, the adjustment was challenging. Mikey was underweight, had chewed large bald spots on himself and was reactive. We had to use every resource available to us, including support from PHS, to help him settle into our home and most importantly learn to coexist with Tilly.

After many months we finally found a food that works for Mikey’s stomach. He has gained weight and is learning to self regulate. He now sleeps through the night, no longer gets carsick and he has a fuzzy butt again.

Mikey loves the cottage, going to daycare, early morning walks and snuggles that must include sustained eye contact. He will always stop what he is doing to watch birds fly overhead. He loves a good antler to chew on, a stuffy to chase and he is the best neighbourhood watch.

Tilly is very quiet and reserved. She lets Mikey push her around more than we would like but she still gets the final say in what toy she plays with and when. Mikey is the happiest boy and he makes us laugh many times every single day.

It had been just over a month with Henry and our faces hurt from how much we'd been smiling and laughing. It was nonstop!

We came to the shelter one weekend just to have a peek since we had been keeping an eye out for a cat. Within two hours we were heading home with a little kitten and it was the best decision we could have made.

Henry felt comfortable and at home right away. He was running, climbing his cat tree, and exploring places we never thought possible.

He is a full-throttle kitten in the best way possible. His parkour skills are top tier, his jumping range is absolutely astonishing and his sweet purrs are the stuff dreams are made of. The only thing Henry loves more than playing is getting cuddles. He is a total love bug and is happiest being with his people, usually right on top of them.

Every day we look at him and cannot believe how lucky we are.

We are so grateful we found each other.

Back to school season is here, and our shelter pals have a wishlist of their own this year! Here's what we're most in need of right now:

🐾 Cheez Whiz
🐾 XL black Kong toys
🐾 Churu, dog and cat
🐾 Freeze-dried or sweet potato treats

What do we use these items for?

Cheez Whiz is a go-to for enrichment time after dinner, especially for the dogs who aren't into peanut butter.

Our big dogs go through Kong toys fast, and we're running low with so many large breeds in our care!

Churu helps with everything from building trust to getting medication down to getting through a vet exam.

And high value treats like freeze-dried and sweet potato go a long way in training and building trust with our animals, without being hard on their tummies!

Every item on this list makes a real difference for our animal care team and the 120+ animals. PHS receives no government funding, so support like this genuinely makes a difference every single day!

Thank you for being part of this. ❤️

To celebrate 85 years of PHS, we're sharing 85 adoption stories.

After losing my previous dog I was unsure how I would ever let another dog into my life. I was working down the road from PHS at the time and often heard the dogs barking during the day. One day I decided to look at the website with a coworker and see who was available.

I came across two profiles that intrigued me. They were siblings and something about them stood out. I submitted an application feeling like I might finally be ready. Unfortunately both siblings were already pending adoption. But then something very serendipitous happened. There was another sibling who had not yet been listed and was still available for adoption.

I arranged to meet Stella, who was called Eggs at the time, and the moment I met her I knew I wanted to share my home with her.

She has been the sweetest addition to my life. The most rewarding part has been watching her conquer her fears and grow into herself. These days she spends her time running around with her brother, going to doggy daycare, finding her voice which we learned is partly because she is a husky mix and collapsing on the couch after a full day of activities.

She loves bully sticks and having someone hold her paw. Stella truly is such a light and I am so thankful to PHS for bringing us together.
