Today is International Corgi Day! 🐶

Today we celebrate one of our patients Willow! Willow is the sweetest dog ever, she is a complete snuggle bum who always wants to be close to her family. She is a fierce protector with a bark that is surprisingly loud for such a little lady! 🥰

Corgi’s are known for being strong, athletic and lively. They are a herding breed that tends to be affectionate and make great companions. They are small and tend to only be about 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder. 🐾

They often have big dog dreams in a small dog body, they have VERY big personalities despite being small. They have short legs, but don’t let that fool you, they are surprisingly quick and agile and Willow here is no different! When she walks into the clinic you can just tell how bright she is by the way she is working out how to get our staff to offer her a beef liver treat.🍖

They are very bright, somewhat sensitive dogs that enjoy playing with their human family and ted to respond very well to training. 🎓

These dogs are bred to move cattle, they are fearless and independent, they tend to be vigilant watch dogs. They make great pets for active families that put time into their needs for activity and togetherness, they are very loyal and loving when their needs are being met 👑

Did you know that “Corgi” roughly translates to “dwarf dog” in Welsh.

June is National Pet Preparedness Month 🐶:

We want to help you get a great first aid kit ready for you and your pup while you are hiking this summer, take it with you, leave it in your vehicle or take with you in a backpack. 🎒

Always ensure that your phone is charged prior to your trip as well as that you have told someone where you will be going.

Some important items that you should have on you:

- One meal in case you get stuck out later than you planned
- Water, and lots of it, both cool and room temperature, cool water is good for your dog to drink throughout the day on a day trip, however cool water can also be used to cool a dog if they are displaying symptoms of heat stroke.
- Medications – Take any medications that your pet is on with you, you should have at least one dose in case you get stuck out longer then planned.
- A tick Twister (This is always good to have on hand as we know that ticks are everywhere)
- Telfa Non-Adherent Pad
- Vet wrap
- Gauze wrap
- A dose of Benadryl (In case your pet gets stung and has facial swelling while out, please ask us the dose for your specific pet)
- Muzzle, basket muzzle if your pet is muzzle trained and wearing it on the walk or a small fabric one is compact and easy to store that you can slip on in the event of an emergency. If your dog is friendly, this may seem like a step you want to skip, however if your pet seriously injures itself it may not feel like being carried/moved and often times injured animals do bite, so ensuring that you as the first-aider is safe is a great step, not worrying about being bitten allows you to focus more on getting your pet the help they need.
- Thermometer (In case of heat stroke)
- Quick Stop (To stop bleeding of toenails that your pet could potentially hurt on the walk)
- An extra leash in case yours breaks
- A copy of your pets vaccine certificate.
- If your pet requires an “as needed” Medication (Ex. Pain medication for limp, seizure medications etc.) You should always carry a dose with you.
- Keep a charged phone with you at all times and before you go, look up the closest emergency clinic to where you are going and pre-save the phone number and location into your phone and GPS.
- Having a tracking device on your pet is beneficial for if you were to get separated in an emergency.

There are many great first aid kits that you can buy to carry with you online, however ensuring that you have everything you need and things tailored to your specific pet and needs is always best.

Today is National Greyhound Day! 🐾

Today, we’re excited to introduce Sydney! A beautiful Australian Greyhound who was lovingly adopted by two of our wonderful clients after retiring from his racing career. We are so grateful to have Sydney as part of our clinic family and proud to care for such a special boy.

National Greyhound Day is celebrated annually on June 2nd and helps raise awareness for the rescue and adoption of retired racing greyhounds. After their racing careers end, many of these gentle dogs can unfortunately become displaced or abandoned. Thankfully, adoption agencies and sighthound charities work tirelessly to help them find safe and loving forever homes, just like Sydney found with his family. If you are looking for a new dog, consider adopting one of these gentle giants!

Before his adoption, Sydney raced under the name “Gold,” potentially inspired by his beautiful colouring. He was flown all the way to Ontario from Australia, where his new family welcomed him with open arms. From the moment he arrived, Sydney settled into home life wonderfully. He is cuddly, expressive, playful, and shares a special bond with his Saluki brother, Valentino.

Despite their incredible speed on the track, Greyhounds are famously gentle, quiet, and affectionate dogs. They are often affectionately called the “40 mph couch potato.” Sydney is no exception! Most days, you’ll find him upside down in the softest spot he can claim in the house.

Like many retired racers, Sydney initially showed some reactivity toward cats due to his racing background and prey drive. With patience, consistency, and love, he has made wonderful progress, and the family cat can now confidently move around the home alongside him.

Sydney is the third retired Greyhound his family has rescued, and their love for the breed shines through in every way. They shared that their hearts and lives feel fuller because of these incredible dogs and we couldn’t agree more.

Happy National Greyhound Day to Sydney and all the amazing retired racers enjoying the loving homes they deserve. ❤️

Happy National Sheltie Day! 🐶

Shelties make great dogs for active households that want an amazing breed, they are known for their intelligence, fast and obedient. They originated from Scotland's remote and rugged Shetland Islands. Although they resemble a “Rough Collie” They are much smaller only standing 13-16 inches tall, so the perfect travelling companion also for families that love travelling and taking their dog along, they won't take up more space then an extra suitcase would. They are sensitive and affectionate family dogs, highly in tune with the mood of the household!

Today we’re celebrating two of our patient’s whom happen to be two adorable Shelties who keep life entertaining for their families, they are affectionate, and full of personality. They are Finnegan and Pheebe!

Finnegan is a 4 year old Sheltie, that has been coming to the clinic since he was just a puppy! He can often come across as a serious little guy when you first meet him, often deciding for himself whether pets are allowed. We know that love definitely comes on Finnegan’s terms but if you’re lucky enough to earn it, the affection he gives is endless!! Several of our staff are blessed to be in this club!

Finnegan is incredibly smart and absolutely obsessed with playtime! His owners say that you’ll give up on fetch long before he ever will! He even knows his favourite stuffies by name! He can also identify his toy balls by colour, now that is a SMART dog! Camping trips, daily walks, treats, and endless games make this little guy happiest! We are grateful to have such a wonderful addition to the Otonabee family!

Pheebe is a 3 year old Sheltie that has been coming to us since she was also a puppy! Pheebe is adventurous, affectionate, and always ready to hand out kisses! She’s incredibly trusting of people around her and really enjoys being in the company of others, but don’t let that sweet face fool you this little princess has a mischievous side! Her owners note that although she’s very obedient, she can find trouble in the blink of an eye, especially if there’s something nearby she can “borrow” instead of playing with her own toys!

Pheebe loves camping too⛺, though the car rides used to be the hardest part. Thankfully, she’s outgrown her travel sickness and now enjoys the adventures much more then she did before! She also loves her daily walks & treats! She is always very enthusiastic about her appointments and we are so happy to have her as part of the Otonabee Family as well!

Together, these two sidekicks are the perfect pair. Finnegan and Pheebe are well-loved companions who somehow become even cuter after a fresh groom. And honestly? As their owner says "Shelties like potato chips, you can’t have just one!🥰"

Happy Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! 🐶🐱

One of the most rewarding aspects of working in veterinary medicine is the opportunity to support animals in need and, in many cases, provide them with a permanent, loving home. Many members of our team are proud adopters of pets who may have had more challenging beginnings, including those with medical or behavioural needs who were overlooked elsewhere, we wanted to introduce you to them as they are an important part of our lives, we often share stories with you of our own pets, but rarely have an opportunity to share their challenges/where they came from.

Tucker-too (adopted 2018)
Tucker-too was adopted from the Peterborough Humane Society by Dr. Rorke after having been rehomed multiple times. He is a Border Collie with congenital deformities affecting his feet, but that has never slowed down his enthusiasm for life. Tucker is energetic, intelligent, and keeps Dr. Rorke very busy true to his breed’s nature. He has thrived in a stable, supportive environment where his abilities are celebrated rather than defined by his limitations. He is a wonderful addition to her home and the clinic.

Daisie and Poppy share a home with our wonderful team member Lorraine.

Daisie was adopted in 2020 after a particularly difficult start to life. She required significant time, patience, and reassurance to become comfortable with everyday handling and routine care. Today, she enjoys a safe and stable home where she can simply be a dog.

Poppy joined the family in 2022 from the Peterborough Humane Society. She initially struggled with trust and socialization, but has made remarkable progress. She is now comfortable with familiar people, enjoys spending time with clinic staff she knows, and loves outdoor adventures such as hiking and exploring the backyard alongside her sister.

Dax was adopted from the Caledon Animal Shelter by our team member Cheryll, who has a strong history of working with complex behaviour cases. Arriving as a young Belgian Malinois with significant trauma-related fear and reactivity, Dax required structured rehabilitation and patience. He has since made outstanding progress. He is now highly trained in advanced scent detection and can actively clear a room of known scents typically in under 3 minutes, he is very enthusiastic in his work, he is also trained in advanced obedience, and continues to build confidence through structured activities, including slatmill work and off-leash hiking with reliable recall.

Remi (Adopted in 2023) was originally brought into emergency care after sustaining a severe limb injury and later underwent amputation and spay surgery. She initially entered foster care with Cheryll during her recovery. While her physical healing progressed well, it became clear she required a very specific environment due to her reactivity. In the right home, Remi has continued to flourish in her own way she enjoys swimming, paddle boarding, hiking, and welcoming familiar visitors, while still working through her ongoing journey of confidence and trust in the world around her.

Gigi (adopted at age 9)
Gigi was adopted by our veterinary technician Krista from LAWS. She came with dental concerns that required ongoing care, which initially made placement more challenging. Now 14 years old, Gigi enjoys a comfortable, peaceful life filled with sunny spots, warm naps, and regular affection. She is a familiar and calming presence in the clinic and enjoys observing daily activity from a quiet vantage point.

Jenny (adopted 2022)
Jenny was adopted by our veterinary technician Lori after being rescued from a situation where she had been kept outdoors and later had a litter of puppies. Following her rescue, she received necessary medical care, including spay surgery, and transitioned into a stable home environment. Jenny is energetic, affectionate, and full of personality, bringing joy and humour to her family’s daily life.

We are proud to celebrate these animals and the incredible resilience they represent, as well as the staff who have opened their homes and hearts to them. Happy Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! 🐾

Today we are celebrating our incredible Client Service team at Otonabee Animal Hospital. Our receptionists are often the first point of contact for our clients and play such an important role in creating a calm, welcoming, and supportive experience for every pet and owner who walks through our doors. We are so grateful for each of them and everything they do.

Erin has been a valued member of our team since 2013, and her experience and steady presence are truly appreciated every day. She brings a calm, quiet confidence to the clinic and is known for her strong organization and attention to detail. Erin helps keep everything running smoothly and is a reassuring presence for both clients and staff alike.

💙 Courtney (currently on maternity leave)
Courtney joined our team in 2023 and quickly became a valued part of our client service team. She is gentle, calm, and thoughtful in her approach, always bringing a kind and caring presence to the clinic. We miss her at Otonabee while she is on maternity leave and are wishing her all the best during this special time with her family.

Collars can fall off. Microchips don’t. 🐈

At Otonabee Animal Hospital, we’ve seen how quickly a pet can become lost and how something as simple as a microchip can make all the difference in bringing them home safely. We regularly have people come into the clinic with pets they have found as a stray and have been able to find their way home as a result of the microchip.

So how does a microchip work?

A microchip is a tiny device (about the size of a grain of rice) placed just under your dog or cats skin. It contains a unique ID number that can be read by a scanner at veterinary clinics and shelters. When scanned, that number links to your contact information in a secure database, helping reconnect you with your pet.

It’s important to know: microchips are NOT GPS trackers. We often get people asking what app they can use to track their pet once they are microchipped. Unfortunately They don’t show your pet’s location or track their movement, there are GPS collars you can get for this, however microchipping is very different. Instead, they act as permanent identification so if your dog is found and brought to a clinic or shelter, they can be identified and returned to you quickly. The City of Peterborough ensures that all stray animals they encounter, including those that have passed away, are respectfully scanned for identification. This thoughtful process helps give pet owners the chance to find answers, offering a sense of closure and the opportunity to bring their beloved companion home.

GPS tracking collars can also be very effective, however keep in mind that collars do fall off, get slipped and batteries can die. Micro-chips are permanent and will be there even if the collar fails. Using both together is great protection for your pet

Accidents happen...doors get left open, gates swing loose, dogs dig out of the yard or slip their collar but a microchip ensures your dog always has a reliable form of ID, even if you can't see it. Ensuring that your pets microchip information is up to date with new phone numbers or addresses is vital for ensuring that the process is seamless.
