🧡 Thanksgiving at the ER 🦃🐾

This Thanksgiving, while some are gathered around the dinner table with a beautiful buffet, our staff are here doing what we love to do 24/7, 365 days a year — caring for the pets who need us, and supporting the people who love them.

This Thanksgiving, we hope you take a moment to appreciate the muddy paws, the messes, the hair tumbleweeds, the extra walks, and even the early morning wake-up calls when breakfast is just a little bit too late for their liking. Because someday, those little things may be the very things you miss the most. ♥️

From our ER family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving filled with full bellies, warm cuddles, and plenty of wet nose boops. And if you need us, know that we’ll be here — through every holiday, every overnight, and every unexpected emergency.

Give your pets an extra hug for us today. There is so much to be thankful for in the love we get to share with them. 🧡

💙 Happy RVT Month to the incredible RVTs who help keep our hospital running, day and night, 365 days a year. 💙

There are so many things that happen behind the scenes of a 24-hour emergency hospital that the outside world never sees.

The emergent IV catheter placed in the middle of the night. The patient watched a little more closely because something just didn’t feel right. Monitoring a risky but lifesaving anesthetic when the stakes are incredibly high. Drawing blood, administering medications, supporting critical patients, and performing CPR when a patient suddenly crashes. Comforting a frightened animal — and the people who love them — when their world has just been turned upside down.

And then there are the moments that never make it onto a treatment sheet — sitting beside a scared patient, holding a paw, whispering reassurance, or staying a few extra minutes because someone has to be there.

Emergency medicine asks an extraordinary amount of the people who choose it. It takes knowledge, adaptability, resilience, compassion, dedication, technical skill and an incredible ability to keep going when the caseload feels endless.

To every RVT on our team: thank you.

Thank you for advocating for your patients, catching the subtle changes, sharing your knowledge, supporting your coworkers, celebrating the wins and carrying each other through the losses.

Our doors are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and behind those doors are staff members who continually show up for animals and the people who love them — often on some of the most difficult days of their lives.

We could not do what we do without you. We see you, we appreciate you, and we are so incredibly grateful for you. 🐾💙

🤠🚨 YEEHAW, PARTNER. THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN. 🚨🤠

Please welcome Sheriff Miller, our newest member of the KVEC law enforcement division.

His qualifications include:
🐴 Being approximately 97% legs
🤠 Sporting a cowboy hat that is approximately 3% of the size of his head
👀 Looking suspiciously into everyone’s soul
🚨 Maintaining law and order through sheer Great Dane intimidation and slobber
🍖 Accepting bribes in the form of treats

Unfortunately, Sheriff Miller’s tiny hat does not appear to have increased his authority whatsoever. But it has increased his cuteness by approximately 400%!

Carry on, citizens. Sheriff Miller is watching. 🤠🐾

🧜‍♀️🐩 This gorgeous Standard Poodle came to us for emergency GDV surgery — but clearly, her groomer/owner knew that if you’re going to have a rough day, you might as well look fabulous doing it. 💅✨

Lyra arrived sporting the most incredible mermaid makeover — complete with colourful hair and beautifully painted scales on her bum! 🧜‍♀️🌈🐚

While we handled the serious business of getting her through GDV surgery, she was busy serving under-the-sea realness. 😂

Because even emergency surgery requires a little ✨booty bling✨. 🧜‍♀️🍑

Lyra is now recovering well and proving that you can be a GDV survivor and a mermaid icon. 💙🐩

🐾 Tawnya’s Road to Recovery 🐾

Sweet little Tawnya came to us after suffering a serious injury believed to have been caused by an unknown wildlife attack. She had extensive wounds that required careful surgical repair, including a urethral tear that needed some extra TLC.

After her wounds were repaired, Tawnya required a urinary catheter to remain in place for an entire week while her urethra had time to heal. 💗

After a week of patience, nursing care, and plenty of love, Tawnya’s catheter was successfully removed — and yesterday, her sutures came out too! 🎉

We’re so happy to report that this little fighter is doing wonderfully and continues to recover beautifully at home with her family. 🥰 Cases like hers are a great reminder of just how resilient our little patients can be. ❤️🐱

Keep shining, Tawnya! We’re all rooting for you! 🐾✨

🌫️ Poor Air Quality Alert for Ontario 🌫️

Wildfire smoke is significantly affecting the air quality across much of Ontario today, and it can impact both people and their pets.

🐾 To help keep your pets safe:
• Limit long walks and strenuous outdoor exercise.
• Keep pets indoors with windows closed when possible.
• Ensure plenty of fresh water is available.
• Watch for coughing, wheezing, increased breathing effort, lethargy, or eye irritation.

Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, senior pets, young animals, and those with heart or respiratory disease are at the greatest risk.

If your pet develops difficulty breathing or significant respiratory distress, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Stay safe, and don’t forget to look after yourself too—if the air isn’t healthy for you, it isn’t healthy for your pets either. 💙

It seemed like it took forever to get here, but summer has officially arrived with a vengeance! 🥵

Heat stroke is a real concern in these significant Ontario heat waves over the summer, especially for young, geriatric, brachycephalic, and longhaired pets. ☀️Try to minimize your pet’s time outside in the peak heat hours, and always offer fresh, cool water. 💦

As always, if you suspect heat stroke, call a veterinarian straight away! Keep cool out there! 😎
