I trained Ivy 3 times a day for 15 minutes from the time she was 8 weeks old.
I know what people will say: “15 minutes for a young puppy? That’s too long 5 minutes is enough.” And generally, that’s true. Young puppies have short attention spans, and you always want to end training on a positive note because the last thing they do is often what sticks with them.
But Ivy was different. She didn’t lose focus that quickly. She wanted to learn, stayed engaged, and rarely left my side, so I gradually pushed our sessions to 15 minutes.
But here’s something I’ve learned: no matter how hard or how often you train, no dog is perfect.
Ivy may still try to chase a bird across the street because she’s convinced that one day she’s actually going to catch one! 😂 Sometimes she’ll even take off after another dog walking by.
The difference is that she comes back when I call her.
And the second I put a leash on her? It’s like someone flips a switch—she becomes the “perfect” dog.
Training isn’t about creating a dog that never makes a mistake. It’s about building communication, reliability and a relationship strong enough that your dog listens when it really matters. 🐾
