On September 20, 23 and 25, the BC SPCA will offer free microchip clinics for pets in the Okanagan and Kamloops areas.

Microchips are a safe and permanent form of identification. They use radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, which is inactive until a microchip scanner passes over the device. When scanned, the chip transmits the identification number. Once registered, this number links to a pet guardian’s contact information allowing that pet to be reunited with their guardian quickly. A common misconception is that microchips are tracking devices; the microchips that the BC SPCA uses do not contain GPS technology and cannot track an animal’s location.

As air quality advisories come up across the province due to wildfires, it’s worth taking precautions to ensure our pets are as comfortable as humans are in the haze and summer heat. When air quality advisories are issued, many of the same warnings for humans tend to apply for cats, dogs and other animals.

This would include avoiding any vigorous exercise and continuing to stay cool and hydrated. As most animals tend to spend their time closer to ground, they are usually spared – since smoke is likely to hover higher in the air.

🐈Cats can be exposed to smoke by how they groom themselves, with smoke potentially sticking to their hair. Keeping cats inside as much as possible is important.

🐶Brachycephalic dogs are already at risk for respiratory complications, so anything that could compromise their breathing could be a serious concern. Avoid outdoor exercise and keeping them cool and hydrated inside is key.

☀Got to get outside: If you must take your dog outside, it’s best to do so in the hours where the sun isn’t so high – be that early in the morning, or later on in the evening.

🐾Animals should always have access to fresh, potable water and plenty of shade, especially if they tend to spend much of their time outside.

🥏Some dogs don’t know their own limits – use caution with exercise such as running and fetch as you may need to stop your dog from overdoing it.

⚠You should also be watching for any unusual signs or behaviours. If you need more information, or have any concerns about your animal’s health, please contact your local veterinarian for assistance.

With wildfires burning across the province, and a haze in the air, it's also important to ensure animals are comfortable during an air quality advisory.

📣FREE Parvo Vaccine Clinic - Friday June 26, 2026
Penticton, we need your help keeping local dogs safe.
Parvo has been found in our community. Parvo is a serious sickness that spreads fast and can make dogs very sick.

💉We are offering Free Parvo vaccines for:
- Puppies and dogs under 2 yrs of age
- Dogs with no vaccines
- Dogs that only had one puppy shot and did not get boosters.
These dogs are at the highest risk of getting sick.

🕑 Time: 2pm - 5 pm
📍Where: BC SPCA Penticton Veterinary Hospital -15 Duncan Ave East, Penticton BC

How it works; Drop-in, first come, first served - we are unable to book appointments for this day. You will get a number and wait in your vehicle until we call you. If it gets busy, we may text or call you when it's your turn to see the vet.

🚫What we cannot offer at this clinic:
- no cat vaccines
- no other dog vaccines
- No exams, checkups or other services
- No same day bookings
(This clinic is ONLY for parvo vaccine)

⚠ Limit: 2 dogs per person

You may qualify if you: Meet low-income criteria (set by Statistics Canada) Live in a supported BC SPCA community Are 19 years or older Own a healthy pet that can be fixed. Please go to our website to fill out the application form.
