🐾 Fear Free Friday Tip: Give Them a Choice🐾

If your dog hesitates on a walk, stops before approaching something new, or turns away from a person or situation, they may simply need a little more time or space.

Instead of rushing or pulling them forward, try pausing, creating some distance, and letting them take things in at their own pace.

Giving dogs choice and a sense of control can help reduce fear, anxiety and stress — while building trust along the way.🩵

Sometimes slowing down is exactly what they need.

🐾 Fear Free Tip: 3 Subtle Signs of Stress That Are Easy to Miss

Dogs don’t always show stress in obvious ways. Sometimes the signs are small and easy to overlook.

Here are three subtle signals to watch for:

🐶Lip licking — especially when there’s no food around
🐶Turning or looking away— a dog may be asking for a little more space
🐶Yawning — when they aren’t tired, yawning can sometimes be a sign of stress or discomfort

These behaviours don’t always mean a dog is stressed, which is why it’s important to look at the whole dog and the situation around them.

Learning to notice these quieter signals can help us respond earlier, slow things down and give our dogs the space or support they need.

🩵Small signals can tell us a lot when we know what to look for.

🐶What Does Fear Free Certification Actually Mean?

I’ve mentioned before that I’m Fear Free Certified, but I thought it might be helpful to explain what that actually means for the pets I care for.

Fear Free education goes beyond simply being gentle. It teaches me to recognize signs of fear, anxiety and stress, understand body language, and adapt my approach to help each pet feel safe, comfortable and respected.

This is especially valuable for many of the pets I care for at Happy Tails — including senior, anxious, sensitive, recovering and medically complex pets.

Fear Free Certification requires dedicated education and assessment, along with ongoing education and maintaining certification. It’s an added level of training that I’m genuinely proud to bring to my work.

For me, it’s about more than simply providing care. It’s about understanding each individual pet and meeting them where they are.❤️

I’ll be sharing a few more Fear Free tips in the coming weeks, including 3 subtle signs of stress that are easy to miss.
