Been gravitating towards orange this last week. Perhaps it’s also natures way of telling me fall is also coming very soon!

This bouquet was created for our farmers market from saved Zinnia seeds, beautiful cosmos Purity, and Oklahoma Ivory Zinnias. 🧡

Dahlia grew from seed - one of my favourite findings in the patch this year. It has an unusual rounded edge almost like a water lily shape but not. We have found this type has a longer vase life and will be keeping this for our next years dahlia row ✨

Sunflowers are opening here and there! We grew over 20 different kinds of sunflowers this year to see which ones we like. So many we have never seen on the market before, hues of gold, pink, orange, bronze, even dark chocolate coloured. Will share more details later this fall after they have all opened up 🌻

Our cute tomato devil from our veggie patch! I wonder if this is what happens when you don’t give them much attention (aka watering) 🫣🍅

Is it just me, or does the summer season always go by so fast! This last week we have been busy with not only harvesting flowers but also starting seeds in preparation for next spring’s flowers. We haven’t done fall sowings before, so fingers crossed and hopefully we get to see earlier spring flowers!

2. My first time seeing Dahlia ‘Gingersnap’ in person and it is on my favourites list. Great for garden and also for cut flower use.
3. All the different zinnias are blooming. Big ones, little ones, bright tones, soft tones.
4. Iceland Poppy Seeds, the smallest seeds I have sown to date. May need magnifying glasses soon
5. Feverfew limelight (although not green at all and really just all yellow!) was the flower that got me into growing flowers. Number one fan since day one. Wrapped this bouquet for Island Roots Farmers Market in Nanaimo. You can find us there every Wednesdays until mid September !

Our zinnias have been starting to pop. We didn’t plant them last year so it’s been two years since we last seen our friends. How we have missed them! Did you notice their star shaped rings? ✨
Our business cards are here and so is our stamp! Thoughtfully designed by Rory and quality printed by amazing businesses. Couldn’t be more than happier with how they turned out.
Dahlias are putting on a show now. Picked out my favourites though I know there will be many more as they all grow out. The first yellow and white one is from Floret’s seeds which we grew out. This one was slightly shorter but sturdy stems and lasted more than a week in fresh water vase. The second one had a honey bee that just rested on the dahlia while I took my photos. Miss Marley also felt the need to join in and say hello. 🐝

This week has felt like a dream. All the flowers are blooming, we are in the midst of peak summer. E & I are lucky to be able to wake up to this view every morning. Definitely not something I had ever planned or envisioned for in my life.✨

There’s a Chinese idiom that I am reminded of: 計劃趕不上變化 - meaning that no matter how much we plan, it will never keep up with the changes that come.

All of our annual cut flowers were grown by seed, nurtured by us bit by bit. We don’t have a greenhouse so everything is transplanted into the ground and we let nature do its thing. Being in the garden has gently nudged us to be more patient. We had been worrying about whether we did too little or too much as our seedlings grew in our new backyard. As they started blooming, it was a reminder that there is no need to worry. As long as we do what is required of us, we just need patience as the rest is nature’s work. 🌱

This last week, we have seen many of our flowers starting to bloom. The rain brought in some interesting creatures. And after two weeks of seeds in the ground, our sunflowers are peeping out of their shells. 🌻

We are nearing the completion of building our little farm shed to store our tools. Really loving this tan metal roof colour from Cascadia Metals We originally went with the champagne colour and found it too bright. Luckily, only half of our roof order came in, so we were able to order the second half in tan.

After a week of work, some friends visited us and we went to visit Parksville Beach Festival for the first time. The sculpture by Ludo Roders was one of my favourites: “Sometimes the greatest strength is revealed through gentleness”

Our first farmers market this past Wednesday at Island Roots 🎉

A few snippets from our day. Cutting the flowers the night before and arranging them in the morning. Then it was a Tetris game to get everything in our car. Arrived extra early to make sure we could set up in time. And then the market came and went in a flash. Met so many people from as far as Terrace to as near as our neighbours just down the street. Had some great conversations on flowers and sharing tips for growing. But best of all, was seeing people’s smile when they saw our flowers. That’s really the whole reason we started Wakey Wakey Flowers - to share the beauty and joy that flowers brought to our family to you 💛

& then capping off the eventful day with celebratory sushi. 🍣. 🥂.

June was especially busy month for us as the season begins. We are also doing quite a few things in our first year starting up our backyard farm. Here are a few images to document our month.
1-2. Sweet peas started growing rapidly after the weather warmed. They are a type of flower that asks for daily care, but in return, they produce an abundance of flowers with a fragrance unlike anything else in the garden. Between the two of us (plus a baby in arm!), one row of 80ft is what we can manage. Will definitely keep growing them, and hopefully add more as we go!
3. Zinnias are popping from seeds that we scattered. We had extra space in our last row of dahlia seedlings that we planted and decided to scatter some of our saved zinnia seeds from two years ago. They are doing so well!
4. Test wrapping bouquets while baby was napping. Surprisingly, it did take the full hour and a bit to figure out which method would be both efficient and pair with the arrangement.
5. We are converting our trailer into a cooler for our cut flowers. We decided on getting it spray foamed rather than using rigid insulation board as it takes up less space. John did an amazing job!
