🕷️ Tick & Flea Season is Here on Vancouver Island! 🐾
Did you know that ticks can transmit Lyme disease through their bite? Lyme disease is caused by bacteria carried by infected ticks and can affect both people and dogs. While not every tick carries Lyme disease, the risk is present throughout Vancouver Island, especially in wooded areas, tall grass, and along popular hiking trails.
The best prevention starts with routine checks! After every walk, hike, or outdoor adventure, thoroughly inspect your dog from nose to tail. Pay close attention to ears, around the eyes, under collars, between toes, armpits, groin areas, and under the tail. Ticks can be surprisingly small and easy to miss.
If you find a tick, remove it promptly using fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight out with steady pressure. Early removal significantly reduces the risk of disease transmission.
Prevention is key:
✔️ Use veterinarian-recommended flea and tick prevention.
✔️ Check your dog after outdoor activities.
✔️ Keep grass and brush trimmed around your property.
✔️ Monitor for signs of illness such as lethargy, fever, joint pain, or loss of appetite.
A few minutes of checking can make a big difference in keeping your dog healthy and happy all season long! 🐕❤️
