Is your dog looking a little extra round lately? 🐶 Or maybe your cat’s "fluffy" phase has lasted a bit too long? 🐱
It’s so easy for the weight to sneak up on them... A few extra treats here, a little extra kibble there. But carrying around extra pounds takes a huge toll on their joints, overall health, and energy as they get older 💔
If you're trying to help your pet trim down, you don't need a crazy total overhaul! A few small tweaks to your daily routine make a massive difference:
⚖️ Get a cheap kitchen scale: Measuring cups are surprisingly inaccurate! Eyeballing it usually means overfeeding by 15-20%. Weighing kibble in grams takes 5 seconds and keeps portions accurate.
⏰ Stop leaving food out all day: Free-feeding makes it impossible to track how much they’re actually eating. Set up 2-3 specific meal times, and pick the bowl up after 15-20 minutes.
🧀 Swap out high-calorie treats: Treats add up FAST. Try swapping processed store-bought treats for low-calorie veggies like green bean snaps, cucumber slices, or plain air-popped popcorn. Most dogs genuinely love the crunch!
🧩 Make them work for their food: If your pet inhales their dinner in 30 seconds, switch to a puzzle feeder or a slow-feed bowl. It slows their eating down and gives them a bit of mental stimulation.
🎾 Make play time count: 20 to 30 minutes of intentional activity every day is the sweet spot. That means brisk walks for dogs (less sniffing, more moving!) 🐕 or dedicated feather wand sessions for cats 🐈
A good rule of thumb? Run your hands along their sides. You should be able to feel their ribs pretty easily under a light layer of fur, like the back of your hand. If you have to dig for them, it's time to cut back a bit!
(And of course, if your pet gains weight suddenly out of nowhere, double-check with your vet first just to rule out thyroid issues or hormone changes!)
