I saw this picture pop up in my memories today; I read the caption and It was about how much mugsy had improved
and it reminded me why I do this.
I didnāt grow up with dogs.
Everything I know, I learned through books, YouTube ect. To where I am now; taking multiple courses.
My first dog; I trained him myself. And I was proud of that. Proud of the compliments on how well behaved he was & how obedient he was.
But life was a mess back then.
Leaving a relationship, no support, working 12s with a 2 hour commute⦠something had to give.
And it was him.
Rehoming him absolutely wrecked me.
Not in a dramatic way, but I felt like a failure because I couldn't give him the home he deserved.
But I made sure he went somewhere good, and Iāll always be grateful for that.
Fast forward a couple years & I met my husband.
He didnāt want a dog right away⦠but I did.
Then I saw Mugsy.
And that was it.
We drove 12 hours over two days just to get him.
And we were straight up lied to. I remember how calm he was when we were loading him into the car; he didn't bark, he didn't cry. He settled and slept. Almost like he knew he was safe
But..
Day one, he bit my husband when we got home & went to put him in his crate.
He snarled at people, barked at everything, and walks were a disaster. He didn't know his name. Didnt know anything.
He dragged us everywhere...even on a prong.
I got bit too.
I remember standing there thinking⦠what the hell did we just bring home?
But I also knew I wasnāt quitting on him. Because he deserved a chance, he deserved a family. He didn't ask to be treated the way he was.
If I figured it out once, I could figure it out again.
So I did.
It wasnāt pretty. It was frustrating as hell.
Some days felt like we were getting nowhere.
But I kept going.
I started posting monthly updates to show how he was improving. It made me feel less like I was doing this alone. When you have a reactive dog, you feel alone. You feel like noone actually understands unless they have a reactive dog themselves.
And that is why I started doing this.
Not for the easy dogs.
Not for the quick wins.
But for the ones that feel like too much
For the owners who feel alone
If youāre in the thick of it right now...
I get it. š¤
