๐พ LET'S TALK ABOUT INTERDIGITAL CYSTS AND PAW HEALTH ๐พ
Quick note before we start: this is general education I share with all my puppy families.
Does your dog get recurring bumps, swelling, or painful sores between their toes? These are commonly called interdigital cysts, though many are actually inflammatory lesions known as interdigital furunculosis.
As breeders, we believe education and early detection matter. Here's what we want every dog owner to know.
๐พ WHAT TO WATCH FOR
โข Redness or swelling between the toes
โข Painful bumps or lumps on the paws
โข Licking or chewing at the feet
โข Bleeding, discharge, or sores that keep coming back
โข Limping or sensitivity when walking
๐พ WHAT CAN CAUSE IT
Allergies (food or environmental), bacterial or yeast infections, Demodex mites, ingrown hairs or damaged follicles, friction and paw structure, foreign objects, or other underlying skin conditions. Recurring lesions are usually a symptom of something deeper, not the whole problem.
๐พ TESTING MATTERS
Before the third round of the same medication, ask your vet about:
๐ฌ Skin scraping, which checks for mites like Demodex
๐ฌ Skin cytology, which looks for bacteria, yeast, and inflammatory cells under the microscope
๐ฌ Bacterial culture and sensitivity, which identifies the bacteria and which antibiotics will actually work, including resistance
This matters most when infections keep returning or past antibiotics failed. Repeating the same prescription without investigating can delay real answers.
๐พ ANTIBIOTICS AND PREDNISONE
Sometimes a vet prescribes both. They do different jobs: antibiotics fight bacterial infection, prednisone calms inflammation and pain. Together they can be the right call, but prednisone suppresses the immune system and can worsen some infections, so that has to be the vet's decision. There is no one-size-fits-all fix. Finding the underlying cause is everything.
"๐พ WHY BULLMASTIFFS ARE PRONE TO THIS
Bullmastiffs carry a lot of weight up front, and all of it bears down on the paws. That pressure pushes their short, coarse hairs back into the follicles. The follicle swells, infection sets in, and it goes downhill from there. It's a big reason this breed deals with it so often.
๐พ PLEASE TALK TO YOUR BREEDER
This is the part I can't say loud enough.
If your dog has a recurring health issue, reach out to your breeder. We know our bloodlines. We know the family health history. We have friends and connections who have been through the exact same thing, and that collective experience is something no single vet visit can give you.
Your vet brings medical expertise. Your breeder brings knowledge of the dog and the line behind it. You need both.
And breeders need to hear from you. We can't track what we're never told. Every report helps us make better decisions for future generations.
๐พ YOUR TURN
Has your dog dealt with recurring paw issues? Was testing done, and did you find an underlying cause? Respectful discussion welcome. Every dog is different, but shared knowledge helps us all.
Feel free to PM me privately if you wish.
Disclaimer: I'm no vet and this isn't medical advice. Always reach out to your vet for diagnosis and treatment of your dog.
