Last weekend I took Maverick in for his annual eye exam. As part of his health testing we have his eyes checked every year for genetic diseases. Once again Maverick is clear of any eye disease.

Maverick has passed all of his genetic testing that is necessary for the breed. Maverick has a CHIC number with OFA which is given to all dogs that have passed the tests that they recommend for their breed.

We believe is transparency and you can view Mavericks results here:

Maverick got mail! He received his Rally Master in the mail, now we are waiting on 3 other titles to come. He’s looking a little windswept in this photo. He had a very full several weekends in a row!

In the middle of August, Maverick and I went to an ALCA sprinter/CAP trial. He got some solid runs in at Sprinter to add some more points towards his next title. Then we thought maybe we would try CAP. Maverick doesn’t chase it consistently, he tends to stop when it changes direction which is understandable considering he’s learned in Sprinter to chase it in a straight line. BUT, he would redirect onto the lure when I told him to and he would put petal to the metal when he did. Apparently this showed enough interest to earn him a title in a new sport. Maverick now gets to add CA(Chase ability) to his name!

On the second weekend in August, Maverick and I got to stay close to home. We went to the EKC show that’s held at the Whitemud Equine Centre in Edmonton. There we managed to qualify in several more pairs. We qualified in 11 out of 12 runs, which included two perfect 100 scores in Master. That includes 3 High in Class. With these qualifiers, we managed to finish our Rally Master Excellent title. This is officially Mavericks 30th title.

These qualifiers held Maverick in the number one spot for mini poodles, and non-sporting dogs in Rally Obedience in Canada. It also put him at number 19 spot for all breeds of dogs in Canada.

The first weekend of August Maverick and I drove down to Okotoks for the AKC rally trial. It was held at a beautiful new venue on a polo field. It was a hot weekend with a high of 36 Celsius. Luckily for Maverick he is no longer in a show trim and it didn’t matter if I got his hair wet. I bought him a cooling coat to wear like most other normal non-poodle dogs do. He likes it very much! He also got to wade in the dog pool and be sprayed with a water sprayer. The ring was covered with a big tent and I was very grateful for that.

We managed to qualify in 10 out of 14 classes earning a couple more pairs and our first perfect scores of 100 in Rally Excellent B.

On the third weekend of July, Maverick and I had a change of pace. We drove down to Calgary and tried the new CKC sport of Fetch. This trial was suitably put on by the Poodle Club of Canada. This was a great thing for Maverick. To him we are just playing his most favourite game, but for some weird reason I’ve added some rules to it. He’s not fond of rules but he adjusted.

He did so well at it that he earned his novice title twice during the weekend! With it being a new sport, the club wasn’t prepared to offer more than the novice level. Maverick didn’t mind that at all. He was just happy to run after his ball! Maverick is the first miniature poodle in Alberta to earn a Fetch title.

They couldn’t have picked a better venue. It was held at an acreage belonging to the famous Lynda Berar! It was the perfect place to spend a fun weekend.

The third week of June, Maverick and I travelled up to Grand Prairie to compete in Rally Obedience. There we discovered that Maverick works best outdoors in the pouring rain. He is a farm poodle at heart afterall! There he qualified in five out of six runs, getting two more pairs and earned High in Class x 4!

In early June Maverick and his friends went to a sprinters trial put on by ALCA. There Maverick earned enough points to get his Sprinter Excellent 2 title. Some of his scores were as high as 52!
