We had to make the hardest decision any horse owner has to make this week….
Hendrix unfortunately sustained a drastic injury in the pasture which left us little to no choice but to let him go. We had high hopes for this boy but as sad as it is things happen.
Based off of clinical presentation we believe he ruptured his collateral ligament of his hind right fetlock which was causing a fetlock luxation. When he was up and standing he was stable but uncomfortable. When he laid down he could not get back up without assistance. Providing him assistance not just getting up but for basic daily things like getting in and out of the trailer was becoming dangerous for him and us as handlers. Jeena has some broken toes as a result of attempting to safely load him into the trailer to get him to the vet. Unfortunately Hendrix case was not compatible with the imaging our local vets (as fantastic as they are) could provide. He would need an MRI for the potential treatment. The closest MRI machine is 3.5 hours away and he was unfortunately too big to be laid down and put in the small animal machine which means he would have to stand perfectly still for 20 minutes straight for the large animal machine. Which was unobtainable on a good day let alone the state he was in. The MRI was also not a guarantee for treatment. His clinical presentation was bad enough they weren’t willing to treat him without the MRI because of secondary injuries from the fall adding to the risk factor along side an already risky rehab process for the main injury.
We want to say a big thank you to our amazing vets in town here for exhausting all their resources and using all their call a friend privileges on this perfect little creature ❤️
Hug your horses extra tight and slip them a little extra super on Hendrix behalf this evening!
