🐴 Fun Horse Fact 🐴

One of the questions we hear most often is:

“Where do horses sleep?”

Horses can actually doze while standing up thanks to a special system in their legs that allows them to relax without falling over.

But for deep sleep, horses need to lie down.

Because horses are prey animals, herd members often rest at different times. While some horses are lying down sleeping, others may remain standing and alert, helping the herd stay aware of its surroundings.

So if you ever see a horse stretched out in a pasture, don’t panic—they may just be enjoying a well-deserved nap! 😴

Did you know horses can sleep both standing up and lying down?

“My child loves horses… but I have no idea where to start.”

We hear this all the time.

If your child is horse-crazy but you’ve never been around horses yourself, it can feel a little intimidating.

What lessons do they need?
What should they wear?
Are they old enough?
Do they need their own horse?

The good news is that you don’t need to have all the answers.

At Sagehill, we work with many families who are completely new to the horse world. We can help guide you through the process, answer your questions, and help find the right program for your child.

Every experienced horse parent was once a beginner too.

Have questions? Email us. Send us all of your questions—we’ve got you.

Our goal is simple: to help put a smile on your child’s face and make getting started with horses easy and enjoyable for the whole family.

Give them a summer they’ll never forget. ☀️🐴

While you’re working, they’ll be riding, exploring, creating, and making friends.

At Sage Hill Stables Summer Day Camp, kids ages 6–13 spend their days with horses, farm animals, outdoor adventures, crafts, games, and plenty of fresh air.

It’s the kind of summer that ends with tired feet, big smiles, and stories they’ll be telling long after it’s over.

Limited spots available this summer.

Message us for dates, pricing, and registration details.

We are thrilled to announce the arrival of the second Ojibwe Spirit Horse foal, a healthy and curious filly. She was born on Monday, May 25th. Her dam is Mandaamin (Mandy) and her sire is Babaaminizhikawaad (Chase).

Once again, we would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to Grey Raven Ranch for the wonderful stud Chase, to Aurora Farms for entrusting us with the care of the Ojibwe mares, and to the Ojibwe Horse Society for their support. We are also grateful to all of the people and donors, including Recycling 4 Animals, who helped make this possible. Last but not least, thank you to the staff and Spirit Horse care team at Sagehill Stables who spend many hours looking after them, with special thanks to and .

The Ojibwe Spirit Horse is Canada’s only Indigenous horse breed. They are critically endangered, yet deeply valued for their resilience, intelligence, and cultural significance.

We look forward to welcoming the public to learn more about this special horse and to see the three sisters and the new foals in the coming months.
