⛑️🐾 Is your pet first aid kit ready for summer?

Accidents can happen when we least expect them—whether you're at home, on a road trip, hiking a trail, or spending time at the lake.

Having a few basic supplies on hand can help you respond quickly while seeking veterinary care.

A well-stocked pet first aid kit should include:
✔️ Gauze pads and bandage material
✔️ Saline solution
✔️ Antiseptic wipes
✔️ Tweezers for tick removal
✔️ Pet-safe thermometer
✔️ Disposable gloves
✔️ Emergency contact numbers

It's also important to know the signs that require immediate veterinary attention:

🚨 Difficulty breathing
🚨 Excessive bleeding
🚨 Seizures
🚨 Collapse or severe weakness
🚨 Severe pain or distress
🚨 Swelling of the face or throat

Remember: First aid is not a substitute for veterinary care. Its purpose is to stabilize your pet and help prevent further injury until professional medical attention can be provided.

📱 One of the most important items in any pet first aid kit? Your veterinarian's phone number saved in your contacts.

A little preparation today can make a big difference in an emergency tomorrow.

🌊🐾 Summer adventures and water go hand in hand—but not all pets are natural swimmers.

Whether you're spending time at the lake, cottage, campground, or enjoying Manitoba's beautiful beaches and rivers, it's important to keep water safety top of mind.

Did you know?
💦 Even strong swimmers can become tired or panic in the water.
🦺 A properly fitted life jacket can save lives.
⚠️ Blue-green algae can be toxic—even deadly—to pets.
🐕 Not all dogs instinctively know how to safely enter or exit the water.

Before heading out:
✅ Supervise pets around water at all times
✅ Bring fresh drinking water to discourage drinking from lakes or ponds
✅ Consider a life jacket for boating, paddling, or inexperienced swimmers
✅ Rinse your pet after swimming
✅ Learn the signs of water distress

Watch for:
🚨 Struggling to stay afloat
🚨 Excessive panting
🚨 Weakness or fatigue
🚨 Anxiety or panic
🚨 Collapse or unresponsiveness

Summer memories should be fun, safe, and worry-free for everyone—including our four-legged family members. ❤️

🕷️🌲 Manitoba Tick Season Is Here!

Ticks aren't just found deep in the woods—they can be hiding in tall grass, local parks, hiking trails, cottage properties, and even your own backyard.

While not every tick carries disease, some can transmit illnesses such as Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. The good news? Prevention is highly effective.

🐾 Help protect your pet by:
✅ Using veterinarian-recommended tick prevention
✅ Checking for ticks after outdoor adventures
✅ Removing ticks promptly and properly
✅ Watching for signs of illness

Be sure to check:
👂 Around the ears
👀 Around the eyes
🦴 Under the collar
🐾 Between the toes
🐕 Under the tail

Remember, ticks can be active whenever temperatures are above freezing—even in early spring and late fall.

Whether you're exploring Manitoba's trails, spending weekends at the lake, or enjoying time in your backyard, a little prevention goes a long way toward keeping your pet healthy and tick-free.

We often get asked: "I found a tick on my pet, does that mean their medication isn't working?"

The short answer is no!

It is a common myth that treatments like NexGard, NexGard Spectra, NexGard Combo, and Bravecto act as repellents. They do not keep ticks from landing or hitching a ride on your pet. Instead, they work systemically through your pet's bloodstream:

How They Work: Once your pet takes their medication, the active ingredients circulate safely in their system.

The Bite Trigger: For the medication to work, the tick must bite your pet to ingest the treatment.

The Kill Clock: Once they bite, the medication attacks the tick's nervous system. Ticks are eliminated within 24 to 48 hours—before they can typically transmit serious illnesses like Lyme disease.

Finding a dead tick—or a live one that just landed—means the medication is doing its job!

📞 Need to stock up?
Protect your pets this season. Please call Oakbank Animal Hospital directly at (204) 444-3615 to arrange your refill.

⚠️ Friendly Reminder: These are prescription medications. A valid Veterinary-Patient-Client Relationship (VPCR) must be had, meaning your pet must have been seen by our veterinary team within the last year to purchase these preventatives.

🌡️🐾 Did you know pavement temperatures can be much hotter than the air temperature?

Many pet owners are surprised to learn that pavement can become dangerously hot—even when the air temperature feels comfortable. On a sunny day, asphalt temperatures can rise high enough to cause painful burns in just seconds.

Try the 7-second test:
✋ Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds.
❗ If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

To help keep your pets safe this summer:
☀️ Walk during cooler morning or evening hours
🌳 Choose grassy or shaded routes whenever possible
🐾 Consider protective booties for sensitive paws
💧 Bring water along on walks

Watch for signs of paw burns, including limping, licking their feet, redness, or reluctance to walk.

A little prevention goes a long way toward keeping summer adventures safe and enjoyable!

Have you ever tested the pavement temperature before a walk? Let us know in the comments. 👇
