Supporting my dog comes before all else, including my fear of reinforcing behaviour I don't like. Banksy has an annoying habit of hitting me in the back of the legs with his front paws when he needs support. This will often happen if we're walking in a new area and he starts feeling overwhelmed. I go down to his level and reassure him every time. This typically results in him giving a tension-releasing shake-off before going back to exploring. He is only 10 months old. It won't be long before he doesn't need the support - his requests are already becoming less frequent. The last thing he needs in those moments is me reminding him not to put his front paws up on humans. ๐Ÿพ

It's a snow day here so great time to restock the freezer with dog treats! Pork shank $2.99/lb at the local Asian market. Inexpensive, healthy, and I have yet to meet a dog who didn't think it was the BEST THING EVER!! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’•

My favourite hack for entertaining my puppy when all my other dog and I want to do is relax? Toy bin "find it!" Simply scatter some kibble or treats in and amongst your dog's toys, bed, or a pile of towels and let your dog go to work! Thank me later. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿพ

Stationing is such a useful behaviour! Here, it enables me to focus on and deliver treats to my big dog without the puppy getting involved and creating chaos. We have practiced this a lot so now when Banksy sees his blanket, he knows what to do. Of course it can still be challenging for him when things get too exciting but he is learning that patience pays off! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Something I learned at the last behaviour conference I attended that has really stuck with me is the importance of firsts. Did you know that way more learning goes on during the first exposure or interaction with something than all subsequent exposures? Definitely important to keep in mind with puppies but also with rescue dogs or dogs new to living with you. Take advantage of those firsts and make sure that they are positive experiences for your dog! ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿšซ Retractable Leashes: Just Donโ€™t.

We know they look convenient โ€” a shiny handle, a long cord, and the promise of โ€œfreedom.โ€ But retractable leashes are one of the worst inventions in the dog world. Hereโ€™s why:

๐Ÿพ Zero control. When your dog is 15โ€“20 feet ahead, you have no control over what they run toward โ€” traffic, another dog, a child, or a squirrel. You canโ€™t reel them in fast enough when things go south.

๐Ÿพ They get dropped โ€” and itโ€™s chaos. The big plastic handle slips out of your hand (it happens to everyone), hits the pavement, and chases your dog as it retracts. Many dogs bolt in terror, dragging the noisy handle behind them. Some run into traffic, others are too scared to be caught for hours.

๐Ÿพ They cause injuries. Rope burns, cuts, tangled legs, and even amputated fingers โ€” yes, it happens. Those thin cords act like cheese wire when they whip around you or another dog.

๐Ÿพ They teach bad habits. Dogs quickly learn that pulling = more leash. Thatโ€™s the opposite of loose-leash walking, and itโ€™s why you see people getting yanked down sidewalks.

๐Ÿพ They create instant chaos. Picture this: youโ€™re walking your calm, friendly dog. Suddenly a 20-foot missile on a retractable leash is charging toward you. Itโ€™s a recipe for panic, bites, and tangled humans.

๐Ÿพ They break. The mechanisms jam or snap all the time โ€” especially with bigger or strong-pulling dogs. Once that happens, youโ€™ve got a runaway on your hands.

If you want a safe, enjoyable walk, stick with a 4โ€“6 foot standard leash and keep that connection between you and your dog. Itโ€™s safer, saner, and far less likely to end in rope burns, runaway dogs, or regret.

Letโ€™s retire the retractables for good.

What has been the biggest challenge of raising my new puppy? Getting him to p*e on walks after he got it in his head that the balcony was the place for that. This happened in spite of the fact that he has been walked a minimum of twice daily from the day I brought him home.

Admittedly, I didn't think it was a big deal that he preferred the balcony. I figured it would be easy enough to fix - just start taking him out first thing in the morning when his bladder was full. Nope. At 4 months of age he could already hold it for over 12 hours and would go in his crate before he would go on a walk. ๐Ÿ˜ž It took six weeks of stress and frustration before he finally "got it".

So now that we're finally out the other side, what would I have done differently? I would still use the balcony potty station as I am loving the convenience but I would make a point of taking him out with a full bladder at least every other day to ensure that became habit as well.

Hopefully this helps prevent someone else from falling into the same trap! ๐Ÿพ
