…how many pets go missing every Halloween ☹️.

- Please keep your pets safe by leaving them at home.
- Get them out to do their business well before any festivities start.
- If they’re afraid of fireworks, find a place in your home they feel comfortable and turn on the stereo or tv to mask some noise.
- If you’re handing out candy, ensure there’s no risk of your pet slipping out the door.
- If you’re having a big party, tuck your pets away in a closed room they’re comfortable in away from the chaos.

Even confident pets who aren’t sensitive to noise can be startled when it’s dark and there’s loud bangs and flashes of light close by.

Panicked animals just run with no ability to make good decisions in the moment. They can easily get lost or worse. Let’s make this Halloween a safe one! 🎃

Helper dogs are really important when we’re working with dogs who are reactive to other dogs.

Peggy is turning into quite a good little helper! She’s able to be neutral when needed and friendly when appropriate.

Murphy is worried about many things happening around him including other dogs. Our session was in a quiet environment but kids on bikes, off leash dogs, random people, and noisy trucks were happening all around us outside our little bubble. Murphy and his parents did a great job responding calmly and giving Murphy support when he needed it. Peggy was a great role model (and ate lots of treats). She even managed to show off her play dead skills for an appreciative audience 😁 (did not get a pic).

I’ll bet many of you say yes – I know mine do! But did you know that when your dog rips apart a toy that it can calm them down?

Dissecting something is part of the predatory motor pattern and it’s considered to be a soothing activity – the end of the pattern. I have seen many instances of dogs “dissecting” their stuffies followed by a significant decrease in their energy, sometimes even drifting to sleep. I’ve also seen anxious or over-stimulated dogs begin some kind of shredding or “dissecting” activity to regulate their anxiety or excitement.

Allowing your dog opportunities to “dissect” is an important form of enrichment for dogs who are driven to do so. But it doesn’t have to be expensive toys from the toy store, there are other ways to offer this activity (involving inanimate objects only!)

Consider using a crumpled-up paper bag with treats inside; an old towel or t-shirt knotted up with treats tucked into the knots; boxes with treats inside and the flaps closed. For puppies, I like to use a “destruction box” – a low sided plastic tote jammed tight with toys or old towels for puppies to pull apart to get the treats tucked inside.

There are even toys designed around this idea: stuffed characters that can be torn apart and put back together again, or balls for your dog to retrieve that have velcro flaps to be be ripped open to get the treats inside.

Give it a try and see how it impacts your dog’s energy and saves the life of a favourite stuffed toy!

Don’t forget to ensure that your dog isn’t ingesting what they’re dissecting unless it’s safe to do so.

“Touch” or “Target” is one of my favourite cues to teach.

Peggy loves to greet people by enthusiastically jumping up on them 🙄. Asking for “Touch” keeps her feet on the ground and then back to me for her treat.

I’ve also taught her to target a foot. This keeps her from jumping up when you’re sitting down. A treat tossed behind her as reinforcement keeps her well out of lap range.

What’s your favourite cue that you’ve taught your dog?
