He survived 17 years!!! ๐Ÿ’•

About a week ago, we were sent a photo of a cat on the Capilano Reserve who appeared to be struggling. The kind person who found him immediately took him to Norgate Animal Hospital, as we instructed.
An old tattoo was found, and we learned that his name was Tommyโ€”or possibly Archer. Unfortunately, no one came forward for him.
Because of where he was found and the information we were able to piece together, it was determined that he was likely one of the last remaining feral cats from a colony of 43 cats that existed on this reserve many years ago. Every cat in that colony was spayed or neutered, and feeding stations were set up and maintained over the years.
And then came the surprise...
Seventeen years later, who would have thought one of those original cats would still be out there? ๐Ÿ˜ณ
Unfortunately, after the blood work was done, it became clear that he was suffering much more than we realized.

His white blood cell count was extremely high, he had stopped eating, and even the medication that should have stimulated his appetite wasnโ€™t helping. We also tried to see if he could be force-fed, but that wasnโ€™t possible. Sadly, his kidneys had shut down.

The vet discussed the possibility of a blood transfusion. However, at 17 years old, there was a very real concern that his body simply wouldnโ€™t be able to handle the treatment. If he were much younger, it may have been worth trying, but even then, there were no guarantees.

After discussing everything with the vet, the kindest and most humane decision was to let him go peacefully.

In the few days he was at the clinic, he was never alone. He was cuddled, given lots of love and attention, and his loud purring showed just how much he enjoyed being cared for. Although his time with us was short, he was comfortable, loved and surrounded by kindness right to the end. RIP Tommy Archer โค๏ธ A huge thank you to Norgate Vets and staff.

Save Rez Dogs is a grassroots animal advocacy platform founded in Treaty Six Territory in Saskatchewan. It was started by Leah Arcand, a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.

Donโ€™t believe the ignorant hype coming from ill-informed outsiders who only ever view First Nations communities through a negative lens.

There are Nations across Turtle Island developing and implementing their own animal and dog management plans, community-led, Nation-specific solutions based on what actually works for them.

This is my dadโ€™s rez, Cote First Nation, where their animal management program is being actively enforced. And yep, they have their own Animal Control truck. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿพ

A truck might seem like a small thing, but it represents capacity: transportation for patrol officers, responding to calls, transporting animals when necessary, delivering supplies, and actually carrying out the Nationโ€™s plan.
Shout out to Tyson Severight for holding down the dog control program, Paws n Claws Rescue, & Kamsack Veterinary Clinic for their collaboration services!

This is what weโ€™ve been talking about with Save Rez Dogs for years: build the systems and infrastructure that allow Nations to manage dogs within their own communities. The work is happening and it takes leadership and community to work together. ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿพ

In 2015, we rescued ๐’๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ข, a beautiful girl whose first four years of life had been filled with hardship. For at least seven months before she came into our care, she had endured neglect and mistreatment. Despite the terrible condition she was found in, Seasi proved to be a survivor.

Everything changed when she was welcomed into the loving home of sisters Dorcas and Anne Birthistle. There, she discovered what every cat deservesโ€”a safe home, devoted caregivers, and feline companions to share her life with. Seasi had her own unique personality and even preferred having a bedroom all to herself. Most importantly, she was deeply loved.

On Wednesday, July 15, Seasi peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge with a little help, beginning her next journey free from pain. While our hearts are heavy, we are grateful that her final years were filled with comfort, kindness, and unconditional love.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to Dorcas and Anne for giving Seasi the wonderful life she deserved. We also extend our sincere gratitude to Lana at Pacific Animal Foundation and to the compassionate veterinarians and staff at Norgate Animal Hospital for their care and support.

Run free, sweet Seasi. You will always be remembered and forever loved.

๐Ÿพ One of our longtime resident ferals, Brownie, has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. ๐Ÿ’”

Brownie was with us for many years. He shared his life with our other ferals, three of them he was buddies with. In 2023, his tail was tragically degloved, likely in an encounter with a raccoon or coyote, but he recovered and continued on with his quiet resilience.

Over the past while, his eyesight had been failing, and unbeknownst to us, he had developed a large mass on his side. When it became clear that his quality of life was declining, we made the heartbreaking decision to help him pass peacefully.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ryan and the compassionate staff at Norgate Animal Hospital for the kindness and care they showed Brownie in his final moments.

Run free, sweet Brownie. You were loved more than you'll ever know.

RIP Brownie
