SOCIALIZATION should be very structured, well planned and thought out. We don’t want to ever “wing it”.

That’s like doing a few lessons of your dog sport and saying ok I think we’re ready, let’s hope we are. We all know where that’ll lead us. YES, it most definitely sets our dogs up for failure.

Instead, if we’re serious about a particular sport, we do the training required, practice in “pretend” situations and only when our dog has shown us they are capable of handling the requirements do we step into the ring.

This is as it should be when we’re teaching our dogs how to navigate the world they’re going to encounter living with us. They need well thought out and planned social training encounters.

This is where the S.E.E approach comes into play for socialization. It is Systematic, a structured & planned process, done first in a safe Environment scenario. At home & then out on prepared social excursions with Exposure levels that are appropriate for the dog at that particular time that will offer good, Positive Outcomes.

Oftentimes, we need another behaviour to turn the lightbulb on and bridge the gap of understanding for our dogs. This is why I love a duration nose target! It’s one of those behaviours that is simple but greatly underappreciated. Who would ever think the lowly duration nose touch could be your gateway breakthrough to teaching and transferring the concept of HOLD, otherwise known as STILLNESS, to other behaviours? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to get a simple duration nose touch and how it can have a dramatic effect on your dog’s understanding and application of hold for other behaviours. Once our dogs understand the concept of holding position through a duration nose target, they very quickly learn to apply it to other behaviours. Get your duration nose touch, and the often pesky hard-to-get stillness behaviours you’ve been struggling with will begin to make sense to your dog.

This is your chance to learn the secret and quick cheat method for obtaining that HOLD.

Loose leash walking doesn’t get much love. It’s not glamorous, and it’s usually one of the last things our dogs learn from us. But it makes everything else easier, including dog sports stuff.

A student from last year’s Loose Leash Walker’s Anonymous class through Online Dog Sports & Pet Dog Training had a big dog who’d pulled her over more times than she could count. Walks used to end in frustration, sometimes tears. What turned it around wasn’t a new piece of gear. It was a change in what the walk was for.

She stopped going out to get somewhere. She went out to practice. Some days that was one street, up and back. When her dog hit the end of the leash, she’d reset and keep going rather than call it a failure. After a few week, she was calling her big boy a “Walk Star.”

If your walks feel like a fight right now, this is the shift I’d start with.
