“Manners”

You can tell much about the level of someone’s basic horsemanship by the way their horses lead.

A horse should stay next to you, not pull you or be dragged by you. A horse should respect your space, and not crowd against you, maybe step on your feet.

This is known as “having manners.” A horse that won’t lead is like a dog that jumps up onto furniture, it hasn’t been taught right from wrong.

I recently read something by a well respected western clinician. He said, “People want their horses to love them so much that they think they are being mean if they create boundaries.”

Horses weigh half a ton. They can easily hurt a puny human if they lack manners and boundaries, Heck, they can easily hurt us if they DO have manners.

People who treat horses as though they were some sort of fuzzy pets can create animals that can do a lot of damage. Creating boundaries doesn’t mean whipping and beating, but it does require that when you say “no” you mean “no.”

Standing at the mounting block, standing for the farrier, picking up its hooves, letting itself get bridled, so many basics that make the difference between a mannerly horse and one that shoves you around.

As the clinician said, “letting a horse walk all over you won’t make him love you more.”

A fantastic clinician!

With heavy hearts we share the presumed passing of our beloved Charlie, barn manager extraordinaire. He was much loved for over a decade. He revelled in leaving his trophies in what came to be known as “Charlie’s Corner of Horrors” in the tack room. Charlie desensitized the horses by strolling along fence rails, hiding in the culvert jumps and wandering along the arena kick boards. He kept many a lap warm during winter lessons.
I’m sure anyone who arrived at the farm had a welcoming encounter with him.
Rest easy, Charlie. You are greatly loved and missed. We who knew you best, are heartbroken.

Join the Toronto Police Service as a Stable Attendant and play an important role in supporting the Mounted Unit and the care of our police mounts!

In this role, you’ll be responsible for the daily care, feeding, grooming, and basic health monitoring of the horses, while also ensuring the stable facility is clean, safe, secure, and operating efficiently. You’ll work closely with uniformed members, veterinarians, farriers, vendors, and community members to help maintain the high standards required for the Mounted Unit’s operations.

This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who is confident working with large animals, takes pride in maintaining a well-organized facility, and enjoys working both independently and as part of a team.

If you’re passionate about horse care, have strong organizational skills, and want to contribute to a unique and valued area of policing, this opportunity is for you.
