Looking at a photo like this, many people will see different things. Some people see a mess, some people see scattered paper.

But keepers see a success. When you provide an animal with enrichment, you want to make sure it’s appropriate for the species. And doing more than just sitting there to look at it. (Which sometimes is the purpose.)

Our cockatiels and lovebirds are offered a variety of distractive toys daily. And this is what we come into daily. Giving us a very clear sign that they played with them, they had fun with them. And it’s a good idea to keep giving them more. And despite the fact that we now have to clean all this up. We wouldn’t change a thing.

No caption needed really. ❤️

What’s this 👀 is the upper parking lot officially open again?!

That’s right! You’re not dreaming! So don’t pinch yourself! Come and help us break it in and escape the rain with a visit to our little tropical adventure.

We are hoping to open the lower lot soon! It’s just undergoing a bit of a makeover. In the meantime, overflow parking is available at the travel lodge right across the street! Can’t wait to see everyone soon!

Did you know that we have recently introduced a new bird into our Main Aviary?

Meet Smeagol! The newest member of the BK crew! We are hoping that he will be a participant in the Interactive tour we have every day at noon, but only time will tell!

Can anyone guess what species he is?

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked, "So do you just cuddle animals all day?" I’d be rich enough to hire a personal butler for my 7:00 AM alarm. While normal humans are still rubbing the sleep from their eyes, we’re out here negotiating with a stubborn tortoise who treats a slice of cucumber like a personal insult.

Our main crew is birds, including a few feathered pop divas who love giving us an earful the second we bring out the scrub brushes. But our facility is home to an entire wild lineup. It’s like managing a high-chaos apartment complex where nobody pays rent, and everyone has very specific demands.

The meal prep alone is legendary. The birds get freshly diced tropical fruit arrangements that look straight out of a luxury resort, and our reptiles eat gourmet, customized salads that genuinely rival my weekend takeout.

Then comes the fun part: enrichment. We spend our afternoons playing party planner for the animals, hiding treat puzzles for our mammals, turning the tortoise yard into a treasure hunt, and crafting specialized puzzle feeders for birds who love a good challenge.

Is it a glamorous gig? Hardly. You will get targeted by a bird who took your outfit choice personally. You will spend half your drive home wondering if that lingering smell is your jacket or the diet kitchen.

But honestly? I wouldn't trade it. It’s about building a real connection with a creature that communicates in chirps, squawks, or subtle shifts in body language. It’s about watching a visitor's face light up when they learn something cool. And, of course, it’s about honing world-class dodge skills when an upset bird decides to fire a warning shot.

At the end of the day, this place runs on our keepers. A huge thank you to the Bird Kingdom crew for putting up with early mornings, late nights, messy clothes, and animals with zero personal boundaries. You’re chopped-fruit chefs, habitat builders, poop-scoopers, and animal lovers all rolled into one. Thank you for showing up, working hard, and keeping us laughing through the chaos every day. We couldn't do it without you!
