🌎 World Rabies Day - September 28th 2026 🌎

This year’s theme is “Stronger Together”, a reminder that protecting our horses, our communities, and ourselves is something we all play a part in.

Rabies is a fatal disease, but it is also preventable. Vaccinating your horse against rabies each year is one of the simplest and most important steps you can take to help protect them from this serious disease.

🦠 Rabies can affect any mammal, including horses
💉 Annual vaccination helps keep your horse protected
💛 Working together with your veterinary team helps keep our equine community safer

One vaccine. One important layer of protection. Stronger Together.

Message us to find out if your horse is due for their vaccine, or to book your fall vaccine appointment. 💙🐴

🚨EIA is still something horse owners should know about 🚨

A confirmed case of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) was reported in Perth East, Ontario, on September 17th 2026. The horse had shown no clinical signs of illness and was tested at its owner’s request to meet an export requirement.

This serves as an important reminder of why EIA testing matters. An infected horse doesn’t necessarily look sick.

You may know EIA testing by another name: a “Coggins”.

If you’ve ever needed a negative Coggins before attending a show or crossing the Canada/U.S. border, you may have thought of it as simply another piece of paperwork. But there is an important reason behind that requirement.

EIA is a viral disease that can be spread through infected blood, including by biting flies and contaminated equipment. An infected horse can remain a carrier for life, which is why confirmed cases trigger a federal disease-control response.

The good news is that understanding the disease, practicing good biosecurity, and testing when appropriate are all important ways we can help reduce the risk to our horses and the horses around them.

This isn’t meant to cause alarm, it’s about awareness. EIA isn’t something most horse owners encounter everyday, but it is still present in Canada, and knowing the risks is an important part of responsible horse ownership and biosecurity.

If you’re unsure whether EIA testing is approaching for your horse, or you’re preparing to travel, talk to your veterinarian and check the current requirements for your destination or event.

🙌 Welcome (back) to the team Sydney! 🙌

Sydney’s love of horses began when she started riding at a schooling barn at six years old. She had the opportunity to compete in both hunter and eventing shows over the course of her riding career.

Along with riding, Sydney has eight years of experience working at equestrian facilities, caring for high performing show horses, including the McKee-Pownall rehabilitation facility in 2021 and 2022. 💪🐎

Sydney recently graduated from McGill University with a bachelors degree in Biology, where she fostered a love for conservation. This led her to gain work experience in wildlife rehabilitation and, for the last two summers, as a zookeeper at the Toronto Zoo. These experiences caring for horses and wildlife developed her passion for animal medicine that she hopes to further cultivate working with the McKee-Pownall team.

Please join us in welcoming Sydney to our team in Caledon! 🐴💙

📰🗞️ MPES in print! 🗞️📰

Artificial Intelligence is becoming part of our everyday lives, including equine veterinary medicine. But when it comes to your horse’s health, where can AI genuinely help, and where should we draw the line? 🤔

In our latest collaboration with Horse Sport Magazine we take a closer look at the growing role of AI in equine healthcare, from gait analysis and stall-side diagnostics to the increasingly familiar question:

“Can I just ask ChatGPT?”

AI can be a valuable tool for learning, understanding a diagnosis, and preparing questions for your veterinarian. What AI can’t do is examine your horse, understand their complete medical history, or recognize the subtle details that come from years of veterinary experience. In an emergency, time spent consulting a chatbot could mean valuable time lost!

The future of AI in equine medicine is exciting, but the goal isn’t to replace the veterinarian. It’s to find thoughtful ways for technology and expertise to work together for the benefit of the horse.💙🐴
