The Healing Power of Light: What to Expect During Laser Therapy! ⚡🐾
Ever wondered what a "day at the spa" looks like at Hume Park Animal Hospital? For many of our patients, it involves a cozy blanket, a soothing warmth, and a very stylish pair of protective doggles! 🕶️🐕
We recently introduced Companion Animal Laser Therapy (Class IV cold laser therapy), and it is quickly becoming a favorite treatment for both our team and our patients. But how exactly does a laser help a pet heal?
🔬 The Science of the "Soothing Warmth"
Laser therapy uses a specialized handpiece to emit therapeutic infrared light deep into your pet's tissue. This light targets the mitochondria (the powerhouses) of damaged cells, stimulating them to regenerate and recover faster.
This entirely drug-free, non-invasive process is called photobiomodulation (PBM). It doesn’t affect normal cells at all—it just gives the damaged ones the ultimate energy boost to kickstart healing, reduce inflammation, and melt away pain.
Fun Fact: The treatment feels like a gentle, soothing warmth. It is so relaxing that many pets actually stretch out and go right to sleep during their session! 💤
🌟 Who Benefits Most From Laser Therapy?
While laser therapy speeds up healing for acute wounds, ear infections, and post-op surgeries, it is an absolute game-changer for pets with limited medical options:
Senior Pets: Excellent for managing arthritis, joint pain, and age-related mobility issues.
Cats: Cats have very limited options when it comes to safe pain-control medications. Laser therapy gives them a safe alternative!
Pets with Liver/Kidney Disease: Because it is a drug-free light therapy, it provides relief without putting any strain on internal organs.
Best of all? Treatments only take 5 to 10 minutes, and there is absolutely no clipping or shaving required!
