NW C**nies Sunflare “Sunny” Update! ☀️

I absolutely adore this gorgeous girl! 😍

At just 6.5 months old, Sunny is already 10 lbs, and she is SOLID! She’s a heavy, substantial girl with a huge muzzle, a big fat bottle-brush tail, and a beautiful coat colour that continues to develop as she matures.

For those of you who are new here, Sunny is a Phoenix Maine C**n!

The Phoenix is a relatively new and rare colour variation in Maine C**ns. Phoenix cats are genetically red (orange), but a genetic mutation changes how that colour is expressed. Unlike typical red kittens, Phoenix kittens are born with a distinctive bluish-grey undertone to their coats. As they mature, that unusual colouring gradually gives way to warmer shades of red, often developing into a rich, deep mahogany colour.

Phoenix is not a separate breed, but rather a unique colour variation within the Maine C**n breed. It’s still relatively uncommon, and we’re excited to be part of introducing and developing this colour in Canada!

Sunny is spunky, curious, and mischievous! She’s always getting into something and keeps us entertained. She’s also completely in love with Misty, although unfortunately for Sunny, the feeling is not mutual. 😂

Sunny has a clear DNA test and is negative for FIV/FeLV. She’ll have her hips X-rayed this winter as the next step in her health testing.

I’m really looking forward to watching this girl mature. Between her substantial build, beautiful features, and unusual colouring, I think she’s going to be quite something!

🐾 What Does “Breeder’s Watch” Mean?

Have you ever fallen in love with one of our kittens, only to see they’ve been placed on Breeder’s Watch? Here’s what that means!

At Maine C**n Mayo, kittens are not available for reservation until approximately 9–10 weeks of age. During this time, we’re evaluating their development, temperament, structure, and breeding potential.

🧬 Breeder’s Watch means a kitten is being considered for our breeding program or that of another reputable breeder we work with.

We collaborate with a small group of carefully selected breeders to help diversify bloodlines, preserve desirable characteristics, and contribute to the future of the Maine C**n breed.

❤️ Does this mean the kitten won’t be available as a pet?

Not necessarily! Breeder’s Watch doesn’t mean reserved. It simply means we’re keeping our options open while evaluating the kitten.

We understand how disappointing it can be to fall in love with a particular kitten, only to discover they may not become available.

However, not every kitten born at Maine C**n Mayo will be offered as a pet. Some may be retained or placed with approved breeders first.

🐾 ADOPT, DON’T SHOP? LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.

This might be one of my more controversial blog posts, but I think it’s a conversation worth having.

We’ve all heard the phrase “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” But is purchasing a kitten from a responsible breeder really contributing to the shelter population?

And are all breeders part of the problem?

I don’t think it’s that simple.

In my newest blog article, I’m sharing my perspective on:

🐾 The difference between ethical breeders, backyard breeders and kitten mills

🐾 Why responsible breeding and animal rescue aren’t necessarily opposing sides

🐾 Where I believe the real problems in the pet industry begin

🐾 Why a “free kitten” isn’t always free

🐾 Why I believe ethical breeding is part of the solution, not the problem

I have tremendous respect for the people who dedicate their time and resources to rescuing animals. But I also believe there’s room for an important conversation about responsible breeding, accountability and where our pets come from.

My philosophy? Adopt responsibly. Shop responsibly. And whichever cat you choose, be responsible for them for life. 🤎
