The paper by Catherine Torcivia and Sue McDonnell is one all horse owners should discus with their vet! Horses skin is highly sensitive, and using local lidocaine before an injection helps reduce the amount of flinch. Even when a horse is well trained to accept the needle, it still hurts (they have been train to tolerate the pain). With the topical lidocaine we can provide some relief from the prick! I know I would love to have that as well when I get my shots..😂

Vaccinations via intramuscular injection are a key component of preventative health care in horses. Development of problematic behavioral aversion to injections is quite common. Our clinical impression has been that topical anesthetic applied to injection sites can reduce the behavioral reaction; ho...

USA DRESSAGE considers inclusion of BITLESS BRIDLES in competition - Your comments to USEF in support of inclusion are needed by January 1st 2021📷📷📷
WBA supports the call by Ms Finder for a USEF rule change on grounds of welfare and equality for all horses, all riders, to allow the option for bitless bridles in dressage competition.
Ms Finder, as a USEF member, is proposing a change to the USEF rule, currently banning bitless horses in USA Dressage, to instead be amended to allow the option for bitless bridles, from 2021. She has asked for support from the World Bitless Association (WBA).
WORLD BITLESS ASSOCIATION sent a supporting letter to USEF on the 1st September 2020.
"We would suggest that if a horse prefers, or is medically required, to use a bitless bridle, then being forced to wear a bit to comply with the rules, becomes a serious welfare issue.
WBA recognises that the welfare of the horse is of primary concern to USEF and as a progressive and forward-thinking Federation we hope that USEF would agree that part of their role as a National Federation is to encourage take up of equestrianism and support those equestrians that wish to compete, bitted and bitless"
WBA has recently undertaken a worldwide survey of equestrians in all FEI regions, the results showed 93% of all equestrians bitted and bitless support equality for bitless competitors in all competition.
