💔 We lost Blondie. Please, please spay and neuter your pets. 💔
The other day, we woke up to every rescue’s nightmare.
Blondie and Tawny’s pen was covered in blood. Sweet Blondie lay there, defeated and deflated, while her terrified sister cowered in the opposite corner, unsure of what was happening to the only family she had ever known.
We immediately wrapped Blondie in a warm towel and rushed her and Tawny to Fantastic Beasts, hoping we could save her.
But Blondie had already lost so much blood. She continued to collapse, her temperature was too low to register, and her gums were pale. Her little body was failing her.
We had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go peacefully. 💔
We are devastated. This sweet girl deserved so much more.
And the hardest part? This was likely preventable.
Blondie and Tawny were over six years old and had never been spayed. They had been loved and cared for since they were born under a gentleman’s deck, but due to medical circumstances, their owner could no longer care for them and made the difficult, responsible decision to surrender them to us.
We were preparing to give these sisters their next chapter. Blondie was scheduled to be spayed on October 29th.
We were so close.
But we were too late for Blondie.
While we aren’t pursuing an autopsy, the severity of her internal bleeding raises serious concerns about reproductive disease, including uterine cancer and potentially pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection). We cannot know the exact cause without further testing, but we do know that leaving female rabbits unspayed puts them at significant risk of serious, potentially fatal reproductive conditions.
Please don’t wait until it’s too late. Spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing unwanted litters. It’s about protecting our animals from preventable suffering, dangerous reproductive diseases, and heartbreaking losses like this one.
Blondie should have been heading into surgery and then on to a new life with her sister. Instead, we’re grieving a little girl who never got that chance.
And now, Tawny is alone.
After spending her entire life with her sister, she will have to navigate rescue life without her familiar companion unless we can find her a new friend. We would absolutely love to find her a suitable rabbit companion and a home where she can continue to blossom at her own pace.
