Flea and Tick season has arrived!
Actually Vancouver Island sees fleas and ticks all year long, but I definitely see an increase in periods from winter to spring, and summer to fall.
Contrary to what most believe, fleas can often be picked up in the environment, such as your yard, sidewalk, hiking trails etc. They don't always come from other pets. Especially since we have such an array of wildlife on the island (rats, deer, racoons, rabbits etc). People are often shocked if I find a flea or tick on their dog but I'm telling you they are SO common on the island that it's rare for a dog to go it's lifetime here and not be affected
Ticks are also pesky and can be picked up in areas you might not expect. It's important to be diligent about keeping your dog and house protected against these critters. Consider asking your vet for advice on a regular treatment that would suit your pet best.
If i find a tick on your dog I can remove it if you'd like. However dogs with fleas will be sent home immediately since I work from my house and they can easily jump into the environment!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Photo attached from Google of what fleas look like in your dogs fur. They run and jump FAST. Ticks do not jump and are usually easier to see especially as they engorge.
