📣 New announcement! 📣

For those that come and see me at Carnivore Kingdom for nail trims, we are now going to be switching locations to my home in the north end of Nanaimo! Carnivore Kingdom are going through some changes in business and are restructuring how they do business and that means no more nails trims at there business! I’ve appreciated them sharing the space with me for as long as I’ve been there and will forever love them and appreciate the opportunity to they gave me!

That said, June dates will remain at the store but starting July, I’ll be setting up shop in my garage (I have plans to make a really cute, small area designated just for nail trims!) I live on a small cul-da-sac so parking will be a little limited so I will likely space appointments out by 10 minutes instead of the typical 5 that I do!

Those that are booked for July, I’ll send you a direct message with a new time slot. Timing will start at 2:30 instead to allow those extra minutes between clients and end sometime around 4-4:30! I will also not be posting my address publicly even though it’s pretty easily accessible, but once you’ve made an appointment, I’ll send you my address directly!

Thanks everyone! Hopefully this new transition will go smoothly! 🫶

🐾 Diego & Coco 🐾

On the left, Coco and Diego on the right have been long time clients of mine at Puppycats Pet Emporium! While they are a bit of a typical chihuahua (small dog syndrome with big attitude), for the most part nail trims are breeze, especially for coco! Diego on the other hand, with those big eyes he’s constantly keeping his eyes on my hand and waiting for that opportunity to get revenge!

Fun fact: in Chemanius, I have an all time high of chihuahua clients! 2 years ago some of you will remember I did a cinco de mayo theme party and had all my chihuahuas come! If your a chihuahua lover, you’d be in heaven! In Chemanius, combined with my mobile clients and pet store clients, I have at least 150 clients! For such a small community, I sure made a big impact on the pet industry! I will forever love my Chemanius clients!

Many thanks to the owner for being such a great client and always bringing them in! 🐾 🫶

Good morning and happy Tuesday!

There’s been a thought rolling in my head for some time now and now I’d like to get some feedback.

I’ve been debating back and fourth about getting back into full grooming and would love to hear if this is something you’d like to see!

I’ve been working with pets for 12 years, but those 6 years have been doing my own business and solely working with nails. Those other 6 years was doing the full grooming package so I’m not a rookie.

That said, would you come to Nanaimo and come see me for your full grooming package? This would be only twice a week as my primary focus would be just nails.

Would love to hear some thoughts! 🫶

Little Ms Fergie!

Till this day, I’ve been the only one to successfully trim her nails. Other groomers have had to turn her away and Fergie has even bit another. To say the least, she’s a little spicy 🌶️ better yet, I’m one of the few people who can pet her.

Fergie has been my client for 2 and half years now and to say the least, it’s been a process.

Little ms spicy pants has always been a growler and barker. When I first met her, she did nothing but bark and growl. There was no chance in even petting her. With mom’s help, we decided to put a small towel over her face and with all paws exposed, I was able to trim them very promptly and stealth. After the towel was removed, she would go back to growling and barking.

To me, this was a coping mechanism to ensure I wouldn’t come near her and ultimately forfeit getting her nails done.

After a few months successfully getting them done with a towel, I started to offer treats after hand and she accepted them. Only about a year ago is when I decided to be brave and go in for some pets while feeding her treats. (Keep in mind, small dog bites HURT). I started to scratch behind the ear while giving her a treat and surprisingly she let me. Called it quits and would do the exact same thing the next month. Again, scratched her ear while giving her treats and she almost seemed like she liked it but didn’t know how to process a human touching her.

Months went on and I successfully was able to glide my hand on her neck and down her back with very minimal movement and it finally appeared monthly visits, she started to trust me.

Now- 2 and a half years later, she still growls and barks but I call her bluffs. We still use the towel on the face and within a minute, all nails are done! She gets some treats afterwards and just this past visit, after some love, she nudged her nose to my hand and for the very first time, gave me a lick and wanted more love! But of course once I back away, barks start again!

It’s taken years, but even the harder dogs can come around. It takes monthly appointments, patience and perseverance to get a dog to come around. Some will, some don’t but it’s amazing to see some greats make great stride in trusting me.

If you have a dog that sounds like Fergie, I can help!

🌟 Gold star for Fergie 🌟

🐾 Raven & Pretzel 🐾

Some will remember posts about Pretzel and some will not, so for a little refresh, meet Pretzel the rescue!

When I met Pretzel, he was a bite risk. He gave all the signs of being not so sure about me and wanted space. The first few visits he had to wear a muzzle as a precautionary. It was clear he lacked confidence and didn’t trust people. The first few visits it was all about the treats. No petting him, just simply sitting close to him and giving treats. After a few visits, I wanted to make the call to remove the muzzle and so we did. I continued to just give treats without any form of touching him and about 4-5 months in, I decided to go in for a pet. With confidence on my end, I needed to just go in and try. While giving him a treat, I put my other hand underneath his chin and started scratching it. He didn’t seem to mind. So I continued giving treats and slowly but surely he let me pet him on his neck and chest. To us, this was a huge breakthrough moment. A moment we wanted to see for a while and to us, pretzel was starting to trust me. After a couple sessions with just petting him and giving him treats, it was time to start doing the nails! I held his paw and with little to no resistance, he let me trim a nail with no issues. With much praise and encouragement, we knew we did it. We successfully trained him! Over the course of a few more months he got excited to see me! He barked at the window when I arrived and wanted to play! Now- a year and a half in, when I arrive, he JUMPS on the couch with the biggest happy tail and immediately wants to play with me. We’ve built up our trust so much that now I can confidently hug him, have my face in close proximity of his face (which I may add, I actually get lots of kisses now) and overall, that bite risk has now shifted to a no bite risk. We’ve gotten to a part where he wholeheartedly trusts me and Pretzel will always been known as my greatest accomplishment in training. Seeing an absolute 360 flip in behaviour is something I’ll forever be proud of and it’s many thanks to the owner for being so consistent with booking nail trims (she’s been a long time client with a previous dog)!

Now- meet Pretzels newest little sister, Raven!

While I don’t offer to work with Rottweilers anymore (I’ve had too many close calls with bits and given in my experience, most of them are aggressive for nails trims, it’s not a risk that I’m willing to take anymore) without the proper introduction to nail trims and even introduction to humans, it can line the dog up for not being successful.

However, given that Raven is still a puppy, this is an exception as then we can do the proper and necessary steps to ensure she is brought up well and successfully with nail trims! Of course being a puppy she’s not going to like it but this is when training needs to be taken seriously and ensure that little bits are handled correctly. We’ve had 2 appointments so far with Raven and I didn’t expect anything but pulling given that she’s a puppy and that’s exactly what she did! Just pulled! I’m excited to see this little girl blossom and with seeing her monthly, this will ensure we create a bond right away and line her up for success with me as she transitions into adulthood!

So far, Raven and Pretzel love playing and it’s given Pretzel a bigger confidence boost!

🌟 Gold star for both 🐦‍⬛ Raven & Pretzel 🥨 🌟

🖤 12 years in the pet industry 🖤

Today, 12 years ago I was living in Regina Saskatchewan working at petsmart as a bather for 2 months before the Managed Jill (may she rest in peace), offered me a chance to go through a local dog grooming academy to become a certified dog groomer! Of course I said yes!

12 years of being a dog groomer but from those 12 years, while still classified as a dog groomer, the last 6 years I’ve gone by a professional Pet Nail Specialist as I have not done the full grooming since opening and operating Paws & Claws Mobile Nail Trims.

I’ve worked along side some great people and some not so great. I found my fitting and I’m glad I’ve gone through the experiences that I’ve endured as it’s shaped who I am today!

The knowledge I’ve formed, the confidence and strength that I’ve built and the ability to continue my journey through this career path is something I’ll forever be grateful for!

For a little throwback, I’ve added in one single photo from when I first started grooming at petsmart to the rest of when I was the grooming manager at Petland about a year into my grooming career. Lastly, a photo from yesterday with the handsome Montie who’s been my client since starting my own business!

PSA: there could be a chance soon where I’ll open my books for full grooming here in Nanaimo 👀 ✂️ 🐾

Good morning and happy Sunday 🌸

Let’s take a second to talk Guinea pigs! One of the small animals that I don’t see often but when I do I get excited because look at how this this small 5 month old Guinea pig is!

Ive been working with guinea pigs and rabbits for about 10 years now!

Guinea pigs definitely don’t need regular grooming however they do need regular nail trims. Much like rabbit nails, they have thin nails that if left unclipped, they can do cross overs and cause pain in the joints and limbs. A cross over is my own term where the nails cross over each other.

How often should you get your guinea pigs nails done? That varies! Most often they aren’t heavy enough to do some scratching to shave down there own nails so it comes down too owners preference on how short you want them!

I usually recommend holding them to begin with and just like a puppy, come in often just to remove the tips and to have your guinea pig used to the process. After that, usually in between 4-8 weeks sometimes longer would be the time frame to get the nails done!

I’m always happy to receive photos and I can tell you if they need to be done or not!

Enjoy your Sunday 🩷

In my 6 years of being in business, I’ve never sponsored a business before. Not that I didn’t want too but It was never presented to me nor asked from me.

This year, Kim Sirett who owns Pooch Pool School asked if I’d like to be a sponsor this year and of course given this is my first time, I had to say yes!

This season at Pooch Pool School, you’ll see a banner of my logo showing that I’m a sponsor of this years dock diving!

I always strive to be able to give back to my community and most often it’s buying Christmas food hampers for families in need, offering my services for free if I feel like people just need a break. And now, I can sponsor an event that specifically designed for dogs!

If you haven’t heard of dock diving before, be sure to check her page out and learn all about it!

💫 CLIENT TESTIMONY POST 💫

my dear client snagged a really cute photo of snoop, karma, joey and I last night and made a really cute post about me!

Joey the cat MUST be present during snoop and karmas nail trim! Joey really does think he’s part dog! All 3 are such sweethearts and both dogs do absolutely great for nail trims, of course with TONS of treats involved!

Thank you to my client for making a really special post! Meant alot! 🫶 🐾

🌈 Sarah 🌈

Instead of making a happy long weekend post, I’ve come to learn today that my dear Sarah has passed away. She was a beautiful senior German Shepard who I had the pleasure of knowing for the last 6 years of being in business.

She started out needing a muzzle 6 years ago as she was a bit unpredictable but over the course of a few months we took off the muzzle and every single month I saw Sarah and she got better and better. Fast forward 6 years, she was so excited when I showed up and for so many years she never needed the muzzle again. She was a special big girl who just needed someone patient to work with her on her nails. Her mom, was such an incredible mama to her and I know this long weekend especially will be hard for her while she navigates it without her dear Sarah.

If you have a special kind message to send Sarah’s mom, I’m sure she would love reading some comments.

Rest in peace Sarah bear 🐻 🌈
