Inspiring the next generation of animal advocates!

Recently, Dr. Large had the wonderful opportunity to speak with a group of amazing campers during their careers week where they explored different professions in animal welfare.

Dr. Large shared what it's really like to work in veterinary medicine—from the journey to becoming a veterinarian, to what a typical day looks like, some memorable moments from the profession, and both the rewarding and challenging parts of caring for animals. The campers also came prepared with thoughtful questions, making for a fun and engaging discussion!

We love being able to connect with our community and encourage young people who are passionate about animals. You never know—one of these campers could be a future veterinarian, veterinary technician, or animal care professional!

A huge thank you to BC SPCA Nanaimo for inviting us to be part of such a fantastic week. We hope we inspired a few future animal healthcare heroes! 🩵🐾🩺

This handsome best boy came in for his dental recheck and was an absolute superstar! We’re so happy to see him doing well and showing off that sweet smile after his dental care.

Guess the breed revealed!!

There were so many great guesses for our guess the breed post last week! Now it is time to reveal what you have all been waiting for….

It was a Shiba Inu!

🐾 They're one of Japan's oldest dog breeds and were originally bred to hunt in mountainous terrain.
🦊 People often mistake them for little foxes! Their curled tails, pointed ears, and fluffy coats give them that signature fox-like look.
🎭 They're famous for the "Shiba Scream." When they're excited, unhappy, or simply protesting something they don't like, they can let out a surprisingly dramatic high-pitched scream!
🧠 They're incredibly smart... and independent. Shibas love learning, but they also like doing things on their own terms.
✨ They're naturally clean dogs. Many Shibas groom themselves much like cats and are known for being very tidy.
💪 Small but mighty! Despite their compact size, they're athletic, agile, and full of confidence.
Fun Fact: The Shiba Inu is one of the most popular companion dogs in Japan—and they've won hearts around the world with their bold personalities and unforgettable smiles!

☀️🌡️ Hot weather is on the way! 🌡️☀️

As temperatures rise, it's important to keep our furry family members safe and comfortable. Here are a few summer pet safety tips:

• Always provide access to fresh, cool water.
• Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or in the evening).
• Avoid hot pavement—it can burn sensitive paw pads. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws!
• Never leave pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
• Make sure your pet has access to shade when outdoors.
• Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.
• Remember that flat-faced breeds, senior pets, young pets, and overweight pets are at higher risk of overheating.

Looking for ways to help your pet cool off? Try frozen treats, cooling mats, sprinkler play, or a kiddie pool!

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately—heat-related emergencies can become serious very quickly.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sunshine safely! ☀️
