SOS CALL: “The Gum Incident”

Brea reached out to us after returning home from a quick school drop off to discover something concerning… an empty gum package and chewed up wrapper.

Her first thought? “Check for xylitol.”

And that instinct mattered. Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly found in “sugar free” gum and candies …and it is highly toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can trigger a dangerous drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and, in some cases, serious liver damage.

She checked the ingredients… and there it was. First on the list.

Memphis came straight in to see us, and we got to work immediately inducing vomiting to help prevent further absorption.

What came back up?

🫧 8 pieces of gum
🌶️ a generous serving of spicy dill pickle chips
🧁 and… a lone timbit

The good news? Memphis is on the mend and doing well!

And Brea? Officially reaffirmed as a lifelong believer in pet insurance and quick action.

🧠 Takeaway for pet parents: If gum or “sugar free” products are ever involved, always check the label immediately — xylitol exposure is an emergency.

A Good Samaritan brought in a hit by car kitty from the area of Carb Beach Rd not far from the Irving in that area. The kitty is a medium/long haired black with white Tuxedo, who is an intact male. No Microchip was found on him. If you or someone you know is missing a handsome tuxedo from the area of carb beach, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
