Please be advised that our Emergency (ER) Department is closed for ER walk-ins, Today from 8am-6pm.

✔️ We are available for select ICU transfers, as needed
✔️ Referral services are running as normal

🕗 ER services will resume Tonight at 6:00 PM

🐾💙 Happy RVT Month! 💙🐾

October is Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Month, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible RVTs who are such an essential part of our team at Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador (VSCNL).

Our RVTs do so much more than most people realize. From monitoring anesthesia and caring for critical patients, to placing IV catheters, drawing blood, running diagnostics, administering medications, assisting with surgery, providing nursing care, educating clients, and supporting our veterinarians, they are there every step of the way. 🩺🐶🐱

They are often the ones holding a patient's paw when they're scared, comforting them when they're hurting, celebrating when they start to improve, and advocating for them when they can't speak for themselves. ❤️

Our RVTs work long hours, handle stressful situations, celebrate the victories, and carry the emotional weight that comes with caring for sick and injured animals.

Their knowledge, compassion, skill, and dedication make an incredible difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

To our amazing RVTs, thank you for everything you do, every single day. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly grateful to have you as part of our VSCNL family. 💙

🐾EXCITING NEWS! SPECIALTY NEUROLOGY CLINICS COMING TO VSCNL!🧠

We are thrilled to announce that Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador will be welcoming Dr. Thomas Parmentier, Board-Certified Veterinary Neurologist, for specialty neurology clinics this November and December!

📅 Upcoming Clinic Dates:

- November 23–26
- December 14–17

Dr. Parmentier specializes in conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and nervous system, including:
🐾 Seizure disorders and epilepsy
🐾 Inflammatory neurological conditions
🐾 Brain and spinal conditions requiring specialized care
🐾 Neurological surgery

He is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Université de Montréal and brings extensive clinical and research experience to our hospital.

What does this mean for Newfoundland and Labrador?
These clinics will help bring specialized neurological care closer to home, giving pets and their families greater access to advanced veterinary expertise right here in our province!

All appointments require a referral from your family veterinarian. If you think your pet may benefit from seeing a neurologist, speak with your veterinarian about submitting a referral to VSCNL.

We are starting with these two clinics and, if successful, hope to welcome Dr. Parmentier back on a more regular basis!

We are so excited to continue expanding the specialty services available to our patients and their families. ❤️

**Please note, due to the limitations in travelling with equipment, there may be some procedures thar Dr. Parmentier is unable to perform at VSCNL.

❤️🐾 Juniper is HOME! 🐾❤️

Yesterday was a very special day for Juniper — after a long and difficult stay at VSC, she finally got to go home to her family. 🏡👏🏼

Juniper came to us after eating toxic Amanita mushrooms. She first developed neurological symptoms, followed by severe vomiting and diarrhea, anemia, and liver damage. She needed close monitoring and supportive care while she fought through a very scary experience.

But through it all, Juniper never gave up. She’s a fighter. ❤️

Day by day, we watched her get a little stronger, a little brighter, and a little more like herself. Seeing her reunite with her family and walk out our doors yesterday was the kind of moment that makes everything we do worth it. 🥹

We’re going to miss this sweet girl, but we couldn’t be happier knowing she’s back home where she belongs. 🏡🐶

You fought so hard, Juniper. We’re so incredibly proud of you! 🐾❤️

🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE - AFTER-HOURS EMERGENCY CARE 🚨

Starting Tonight, Wednesday, August 19 at 8:00 PM, Veterinary Specialty Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador (VSCNL) will be introducing a triage-based system for emergency care, the same system being used by your family veterinarian.

This new system is being implemented to:
❤️ Provide the best possible care for every patient
⏱️ Help reduce wait times and bottlenecks
🚨 Ensure the most critical patients are prioritized appropriately
📞 Provide guidance to pet owners before arriving at the hospital

This change will allow your pet to be triaged by a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) before coming into the hospital, helping us ensure that patients receive the appropriate level of care.

🩺 What does this mean?
From 8:00 PM – 8:00 AM, Sunday through Thursday, please call your family veterinarian to be transferred to the Triage Service.

If you do not have a family veterinarian, please call us directly at (709) 221-7838 to be transferred to the same Triage Service.
You will be connected with an RVT who will triage your pet and determine the appropriate next steps.

If your pet requires care at VSCNL, you will be instructed to come directly to the hospital.

⚠️ Please do not come to VSCNL for after-hours emergency care until you have called and spoken with an RVT.

We understand that seeking emergency care for your pet can be stressful, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we implement this new process.

If your pet is experiencing an emergency between 8 PM and 8 AM Sunday-Thursday, please call your family veterinarian first so the RVT can triage your pet.

From comforting nervous pets and supporting our veterinarians and technicians to helping families through some of their most difficult moments, our veterinary assistants are an essential part of every patient’s journey.

Their compassion, dedication, hard work, and willingness to jump in wherever they're needed never go unnoticed. Whether it's holding a paw, preparing for surgery, cleaning and organizing, or simply offering a reassuring smile, they make a difference every single day.

Just a reminder that VSC is OPEN today for emergency visits, and our current ER status is 🟢 Green.

Since the other veterinary clinics are closed for the holiday, we may be busier than usual, and wait times could be a little longer. Our amazing team is working hard to care for every pet as quickly and compassionately as possible, and we truly appreciate your patience and kindness. ❤️
