LOCATAIRES AVEC ANIMAUX : QUELS SONT VOS DROITS? ASSISTEZ À UNE CONFÉRENCE EN LIGNE GRATUITE

Chaque jour, nous recevons des demandes d’information concernant les droits des locataires qui vivent avec un animal.

Le mardi 11 août 2026 de 18 h à 19 h 30, la SPCA de Montréal présentera, en collaboration avec la Legal Information Clinic/Clinique d'information juridique à McGill , un atelier en ligne gratuit sur les droits des locataires au Québec, incluant un volet consacré à la vie avec un animal de compagnie en logement locatif.

L’atelier abordera notamment :

-Les fondements du bail résidentiel au Québec
- Les droits et les recours des locataires : réparations, augmentation de loyer, reprise de logement, éviction et harcèlement
- Les animaux de compagnie en logement locatif : ce qu’un bail peut légalement interdire et l’évolution récente de la jurisprudence
- Les recours possibles au Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL)
- Les ressources offertes par les organismes communautaires

Me Sophie Gaillard, directrice de la défense des animaux et des affaires juridiques et gouvernementales à la SPCA de Montréal, sera présente afin de répondre aux questions.

ANIMALS AND RENTAL HOUSING: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! JOIN OUR FREE ONLINE INFORMATION SESSION

Every day, we receive questions about the rights of tenants who live with companion animals.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., the Montreal SPCA, in collaboration with the Legal Information Clinic at McGill, will present a free online information session on tenants' rights in Quebec, including a section dedicated to living with companion animals in rental housing.

Topics will include:

- The fundamentals of residential leases in Quebec
- Tenants' rights and legal remedies, including repairs, rent increases, repossession of a dwelling, eviction and harassment
- Companion animals in rental housing: what a lease can legally prohibit and recent developments in Quebec case law
- Available remedies before the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL)
- Resources offered by community organizations

Sophie Gaillard, Director of Animal Advocacy and Legal and Government Affairs at the Montreal SPCA, will also be on hand to answer questions.

In a neighborhood in Spain, a teenage boy looked at piles of discarded plastic bottles and saw possibility instead of waste. As winter temperatures dropped, he noticed stray dogs curling up against walls and under benches to escape the cold. Determined to help, he began collecting empty bottles from streets and recycling bins. Using simple tools and careful layering techniques, he compressed and sealed the plastic into thick, insulated panels strong enough to form compact shelters.

Each dog house is designed with raised floors to keep out dampness and angled roofs to deflect rain. The trapped air inside the plastic layers acts as insulation, helping retain warmth during chilly nights. Painted in bright colors, the shelters are placed in safe corners where street animals often gather.

What began as one teenager’s experiment has grown into a quiet movement of compassion. By turning litter into lifelines, he addresses two problems at once — plastic pollution and animal suffering. In every recycled bottle and carefully assembled panel, he proves that age does not limit impact, and that ingenuity paired with empathy can warm even the coldest streets.
