✨Feel Good Friday!✨

Eloise was sedated for x-rays of her knees and a thorough orthopedic exam at Coventry Animal Hospital. Often when patients are painful and tense or muscular and large, it can be challenging to get a complete examination of their bones, muscles and joints, so sedation is very helpful. There was swelling under her kneecap on her x-ray and she was positive for the cranial drawer test. These findings supported a diagnosis of torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), as the team suspected. These cruciate tears are the most common cause of hind limb lameness in dogs. The diagnosis was further confirmed when Ellie’s x-rays were reviewed by a mobile orthopedic surgeon who was then booked to perform a tibial plateau elevating osteotomy at Coventry.🐾

✨Feel Good Friday ✨

Please meet Eloise, or Ellie for those that know her! She is Dr. Mueller’s 4-year-old potcake. From the time she was rescued, Ellie has maintained a healthy body weight and an active lifestyle – she loves to run and go to doggy daycare. Unfortunately, in December, she was suddenly unable to bear weight on her left hind limb and her knee was extremely sore. She was immediately put on strict rest – this meant no stairs or off-leash running. Eloise was also started on pain medication: Metacam (an anti-inflammatory), paired with gabapentin (a secondary pain reliever with mild sedating properties). Her knee was iced several times a day to help reduce swelling. Stay tuned to see what the next steps were for Ellie.🐾

✨Wild Wednesday ✨

This cuterebra larva was removed surgically from a tiny kitten’s neck last week. These larvae are found in burrows and generally infect rabbits, but can sometimes infect cats. They infect animals by entering through their mouth, nose or a wound and then migrate through their tissue to grow in the fatty layer under their skin. The larvae will eventually make a breathing hole in the skin. Cuterebra can cause bacterial infection and pain for kitties.🐾

Tiny Coco is on the mend and we look forward to watching him grow 💙
