I agree with the sentiment of this story after reading that viral click-bait admonishment purportedly written by a South African veterinarian.

"Putting an animal to sleep is a "very peaceful process", Weeks-Bell insists, with the pet first administered sedation, which can "feel like a little bee sting".

"The animal is then given an overdose of what is a very old anaesthetic, which stops the heart," she says."

Once your pet has been properly sedated, during which time it is more important for familiar company, there should be no guilt in leaving. However, I have found that to help your own grieving process, it is better for you to stay to the end to witness a peaceful passing.

Veterinarian Dr Kiah Weeks-Bell says social media is bullying owners into being present at the end.

Happy Easter

At 83, I believed my remaining years would slip by quietly, with no one beside me. Then a 16-year-old Dachshund found his way into my life.
My name is Martin. While browsing a Florida animal shelter’s website, I came across a picture of a dog named Theo. His previous family had requested that he be euthanized simply because he was old. The shelter refused their request. Even so, for three weeks, no one showed interest in him.

When I finally called the shelter, a staff member told me softly, “He’s fading. He’s starting to lose hope.”

Without hesitation, I replied, “Please don’t transfer him anywhere. I’m coming right now.”

Two hours later, I gently opened the door to his kennel. Theo slowly walked toward me, his small ears perked slightly, and leaned against my leg as if he had already chosen to trust me. I brought him home that very day.

That first night, Theo ate a full meal for the first time in days. Within a week, he was following me from room to room, his small determined steps making sure I was never alone.

Now, every morning before dawn, he sits patiently beside my bed, waiting for me to wake up.

People often say that I saved an elderly dog.

But in truth, Theo saved me. He brought purpose, loyalty, and warmth back into my life.

The day is finally upon us... Friday the 13th (lucky for us!) of March, 2026 when the evening message recorded daily on our answering machine will simply say "Thank you for calling the CREDITVIEW ANIMAL & BIRD HOSPITAL. We are permanently closed" until the end of the month when the phone lines will be disconnected. It brings to an end 45 years of an exciting career in veterinary medicine, 40 of those in practice in Canada after graduating with a second veterinary degree from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.
It also will bring to an end the 38 years of service provided by our hospital to the local community, initially as CREDITVIEW ANIMAL HOSPITAL established in 1988 at the Deer Run Shopping Centre (4040 Creditview Road) and then as the rebranded in 1999 as the CREDITVIEW ANIMAL & BIRD HOSPITAL at 5330 Creditview Road in a self standing bungalow for the last 28 years. Lisette Saldanha will also be retiring from her behind-the-scenes but important role in the administration of the practice to take on the more onerous task of keeping me grounded.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many longstanding and loyal clients whom we have had the privilege to know and be entrusted with their furry and feathered family. Please feel free to share your memories as comments on this post. The image is of our unique veterinary ambulance that served us well for over 20 years.

Blessing of the animals ceremony at St Peter's today...
Italy celebrates the feast day of St Anthony Abbot, the patron saint and protector of animals, today, 17th January.
Each year an open air stable is assembled by the Italian Association of Livestock Farmers (AIA) at Piazza Pio XII in front of St Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
This traditional exhibition of animals, which includes cows, sheep, goats and hens, takes place from 09.30 until about 15.00 and is open to all. At 10.30 a Mass will be celebrated for the farmers and their families by the Archpriest of St Peter’s who later imparts a blessing on the animals present.
At midday a procession of horses belonging to the Italian police goes from Largo Giovanni XXIII to Piazza Pio XII, along Via della Conciliazione which is normally closed from 11.30 to 13.30.
The saint, who died in Egypt in 356, has always enjoyed a widespread following among Italy’s agricultural communities.
According to an ancient legend from the Veneto in northern Italy, on the night of 17th January, animals acquired the ability to speak. On this night each year, it is said that people were kept away from stables because to hear the animals talk was considered a bad omen.
