🐾 Happy International Sheltie Day from all of us at Erin Centre Animal Hospital! 🐾

Did you know that Shetland Sheepdogs are ranked the 6th smartest dog breed in the world? 🧠✨ Originally from the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland, these beautiful pups aren’t just miniature Collies—they are a fiercely loyal, incredibly affectionate, and highly intelligent breed all their own.

Whether they’re showing off a new trick, herding toys around the living room, or just offering the best cuddles after a long day, Shelties hold a truly special place in our hearts (and our clinic!).

📸 We want to see your fluffballs! If you are a proud Sheltie parent, drop a photo of your pup in the comments below so we can shower them with love today! 👇❤️

Understanding Diabetes in Cats & Dogs

Diabetes mellitus isn’t just a human health condition. It affects roughly 1 in 300 dogs and 1 in 230 cats over their lifetimes.

When a pet has diabetes, their pancreas either isn't producing enough insulin, or their body isn't responding to it properly. Without insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of fueling their muscles and organs.

The Risk Factors You Need to Know:

🐕 Dogs: Typically develop Type 1 (insulin-deficiency). Unspayed female dogs and certain breeds (like Poodles, Schnauzers, and Pugs) are at higher risk.

🐈 Cats: Often develop Type 2 (insulin-resistance). Overweight, indoor, and neutered male cats carry a significantly higher predisposition.

The Proactive Approach:
If your pet is diagnosed, it is not a life sentence! Modern veterinary medicine makes management highly successful through:

Tailored Nutrition: High-protein, low-carb diets for cats; high-fibre diets for dogs.

Routine Insulin: Gentle injections that become second nature to give at home.

Regular Monitoring: Quick glucose checks to keep them perfectly balanced.

Preventative care is the best medicine. If your pet is entering their senior years or carrying a little extra weight, regular blood screenings are key.

Let's design a wellness plan that fits your pet's unique life. Contact our medical team today to schedule an evaluation. 📲

Let’s talk about the "F-Word"... FOSTERING! 🐾 May is National Foster Care Month, and we’re here to bust a few common myths about what it actually takes to be a pet foster parent.

❌ Myth: "I’ll get too attached and want to keep them all."
✅ Reality: It is tough to say goodbye, but seeing them go to a loving forever family because of your help? There is no better feeling. Plus, "foster failing" happens, and we don't judge! 😉

❌ Myth: "Fostering is too expensive."
✅ Reality: Most shelters and rescues cover veterinary care (that's where we come in!) and often provide food and supplies. You just provide the space and the love.

❌ Myth: "I work full-time, so I can't foster."
✅ Reality: Many shelters look for fosters who work standard hours because it helps pets get used to a normal household routine!

Fostering is the ultimate way to test-drive pet ownership or give back to the animal community without a 15-year commitment.

Have you ever fostered a pet before? Tell us your favorite foster story (or show us your foster fails!) in the comments below! 👇

Is your dog truly "slowing down," or are they trying to tell you something? 🐾

May is Canine Arthritis Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to look closer at your furry friend’s daily habits. Arthritis can be subtle, but early detection makes a world of difference in their quality of life.

Keep an eye out for these "quiet" signs:

Hesitation before climbing stairs or jumping into the car.

Stiffness after a long nap.

Lagging behind on your usual walks.

Licking or chewing at specific joints.

Changes in temperament or irritability.

Our team is here to help you navigate a personalized comfort plan, from nutrition and supplements to specialized therapies. Let’s keep those tails wagging!

It’s Be Kind to Animals Week, and we believe kindness starts with a single paw print! 🐾✨

Being "kind" to animals goes beyond extra treats (though those are great too!). This week, let's challenge ourselves to make the world a little safer for all creatures. Here are three simple ways you can participate:

Check your neighborhood: Keep a fresh bowl of water outside for local wildlife or strays. 💧

Update those IDs: Ensure your pet’s microchip info and collar tags are current so they can always find their way home. 🏷️

Support a Shelter: Consider donating a bag of food or a few towels to our local rescue partners.

How are you showing extra love to your pets this week? Drop a photo of your happy campers in the comments! 👇

🐾 Happy Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! 🐾

Today, we’re celebrating the brave, loving, and sometimes goofy shelter pets who are waiting for their second chance. 🏡❤️

Adopting a shelter animal doesn’t just save a life—it adds a loyal best friend to your family. Whether it’s a purring lap cat, a wiggly rescue pup, or a senior pet looking for a calm home, shelter animals have so much love to give.

Before you bring your new family member home, remember:

✅ Schedule a wellness exam within the first week
✅ Bring any shelter medical records
✅ Ask us about vaccine schedules, microchipping, and spay/neuter services
✅ Be patient—adopted pets need time to decompress and trust

Together, we can help adopted pets thrive. Tag a friend who’s ready to adopt—or better yet, tag your own shelter pet and show them some love today! 👇🐶🐱

🐾 Happy International Guide Dog Day! 🦮

Today, we celebrate the quiet heroes who lead the way. For millions of visually impaired and blind individuals, a Guide Dog is more than a pet—they are eyes, independence, confidence, and a loyal best friend all rolled into one.

From navigating busy city streets to avoiding low-hanging branches, these incredible dogs perform miracles every single day. But they don’t do it alone. Behind every successful team is months of specialized training, the love of a puppy raiser, and the unbreakable bond between human and dog.

Let’s paws for a moment to thank these amazing animals and the organizations that train them. 🐕‍🦺❤️

If you see a Guide Dog on the job, remember:
🚫 Don’t pet, feed, or distract them.
✅ Do admire them from afar—they are working hard to keep their partner safe.
