🦺 Paws for a Purpose: It’s Assistance Dog Day!

🦺Today we honor the incredible service dogs who empower individuals with disabilities and medical conditions to navigate daily life with confidence.

At Erin Centre Animal Hospital, we frequently see the remarkable bond between assistance dogs and their handlers. Because these dogs are constantly on the move, keeping them healthy, comfortable, and pain-free is one of our proudest roles as veterinary professionals.

Do you know proper Assistance Dog Etiquette?
When you spot an assistance dog on the job:

Do not pet, feed, or call to them: Distracting a service dog in uniform can put their handler in danger.

Treat the handler, not just the dog: Address the handler directly rather than trying to get the dog's attention.

Give them space: Allow working teams room to navigate crowded spaces, aisles, and doorways safely.

Keep your pets leash-controlled: Ensure non-service pets remain at a respectful distance to avoid interrupting their work.

Join us today in giving a big virtual round of applause to the dedicated trainers, foster raisers, handlers, and—most of all—the amazing dogs who make such a difference! 👏🐾

🚫 Toxic Bites: Keep These Off Your Pet’s Plate! 🐾

Ever caught your dog giving you "the eyes" while you're cooking? While sharing is caring, some everyday kitchen staples can lead to a trip to the emergency room.

Here are 5 common foods that should NEVER end up in your pet's bowl:

Chocolate, Coffee & Caffeine: Contains methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, racing heart rate, seizures, and worse.

Grapes & Raisins: Highly toxic to dogs—even tiny amounts can cause sudden kidney failure.

Onions, Garlic & Chives: Whether raw, cooked, or powdered, these damage red blood cells and can lead to severe anemia.

Xylitol / Birch Sugar: Found in sugar-free gum, peanut butter, and baked goods. It causes a dangerous drop in blood sugar and severe liver failure.

Avocados: Contain persin, which causes stomach upset in dogs and cats (and can be fatal to birds and small mammals).

⚠️ What to do in an emergency:
If you suspect your pet ate something toxic, don't wait for symptoms to show. Call Erin Centre Animal Hospital immediately or reach out to the Pet Poison Helpline!

🪥 Is it just "dog breath," or is something more serious happening? 🐾

A healthy pet smile isn’t just about fresh kisses; it’s the gateway to your pet's entire body health.

🦷 Left untreated, periodontal disease doesn't stay in the mouth. Plaque, tartar, and bacteria cause inflammation that can destroy gums and bone, and worse, the bacteria enter the bloodstream and can travel to vital organs.

Studies show a direct link between poor oral health and serious conditions of the:

🔬 Kidneys

🧠 Did you know a mental workout can tire your pet out just as much as a 30-minute walk? 🐾Physical exercise is essential, but mental stimulation is the secret to a happier, calmer pet! Brain games help combat boredom, reduce anxiety, and keep senior minds sharp. 🐶🐱

Here are 3 simple intellectual games you can try at home today:

1️⃣ The Muffin Tin PuzzlePlace treats in the cups of a muffin pan and cover each hole with a tennis ball. Let your dog figure out how to nuzzle or paw the balls away to get the reward!

2️⃣ The Sniff & Seek Cup GameHide a small treat under one of three plastic cups. Shuffle them around and encourage your pet to use their nose to pinpoint where the reward is hiding.

3️⃣ DIY Cardboard Foraging Box (Great for Cats!)Fill an open box with crumpled paper, toilet paper rolls, or small toys, and scatter kibble inside. It turns mealtime into a natural hunting activity!💡

Vet Tip: Always start easy so your pet doesn't get frustrated, and supervise them during play with home DIY items.

What’s your pet’s favorite puzzle game? Drop a picture or video in the comments—we’d love to see them in action! 👇

Heading outdoors to enjoy the summer sun? ☀️ High grass, wooded paths, and even backyard gardens can harbor ticks, fleas, and biting bugs looking for their next meal.

Protecting your pet against summer bugs doesn't just keep them itch-free—it protects them from serious diseases like Lyme disease and heartworm.

What to keep in mind this season:
✔️ Check After Every Walk: Ticks love hiding in warm spots like under collars, around tail bases, and inside ears.

✔️ Safe Tick Removal: Found a tick? Bring your pet in, and our team will safely remove it and walk you through any recommended diagnostics or bloodwork.

✔️ Tailored Protection: Every pet's lifestyle is different! Whether you have an avid hiker or a backyard lounge-bug, we can help choose the right parasite control option.

If your pet has a pesky pest complaint or needs a refill on preventative treatment, schedule a visit with our team! 🩺❤️

Nutrition is the first step toward healing. ❤️🩹🐾

For many rescue animals arriving at shelters, proper nutrition is more than just a meal—it’s medicine. Many pets come from situations of neglect or hardship and need specialized, nutrient-dense diets to gain strength, heal skin conditions, and rebuild their health.

For National Feed a Rescue Pet Week, we’re highlighting why proper nutrition matters so much for shelter pets:

✨ Rebuilds Trust & Energy: Consistent, nutritious meals help reduce anxiety and build confidence in rescue animals.

✨ Frees Up Rescue Budgets: When food is supplied, rescues can direct funds toward critical surgeries, vaccines, and wellness exams.

✨ Prepares Pets for Adoption: Healthy, well-nourished pets thrive faster and find their forever families sooner!

As veterinary professionals, the team at Erin Centre Animal Hospital sees firsthand how good food transforms lives.

How are you helping feed a pet in need this week?👇🐕🐈

In the wake of the devastating Ontario wildfires, our community showed what true resilience looks like. 🍁

A massive shout-out to the incredible residents who opened their homes, farms, and hearts to neighbors and animals fleeing the smoke and flames. While first responders fought the fires on the front lines, you provided the ultimate frontline of comfort, safety, and hope.

True leadership and community aren't defined during the easy times, but during the hardest. To everyone who hosted an evacuee: Thank you for keeping Ontario safe, housed, and cared for. 🙌🎒

Our pets are family, and in an emergency, every second counts. ❤️

At Erin Centre Animal Hospital, we want to make sure your entire family—including your cats, dogs, and pocket pets—are prepared in case of a fire.

Save this post and use this simple checklist to build your pet emergency plan today:

🚪 Keep leashes and carriers near the door: If you need to evacuate quickly, or if emergency responders need to enter, having leashes and carriers easily accessible near your main exit makes all the difference.

🪟 Use a Pet Rescue Decal: Stick a "Pet Alert" decal on your front window listing the number and types of pets inside. If a fire breaks out while you're away, this immediately tells firefighters who they need to look for.

🎒 Pack a "Go-Bag": Keep a small bag packed with a 3-day supply of food, bottled water, any essential medications, and copies of their vaccination records.

Let's keep our Mississauga pets safe! 🐾 If you need updated copies of your pet's medical records or need to top up any prescription medications for their emergency kit, give our friendly team a call at 905-607-8600.

Pop Quiz: Is your heart (and home!) ready for a pet? 🐶🐱

Thinking about adding a furry family member? We love that for you! To help you make the best decision, our team at Erin Centre Animal Hospital put together a quick 3-question self-quiz.

1️⃣ What does your ideal evening look like?
A) Crashing on the couch immediately—I need absolute quiet. 😴
B) Heading out for a run, doing chores, or teaching a puppy how to "sit"! 🎾

2️⃣ How do you feel about "organized chaos"?
A) I like my home pristine. Pet dander, chewed slippers, or a knocked-over plant would stress me out. 🧼
B) I can handle a little mess! A few tumbleweeds of pet hair and some muddy paw prints are just signs of a happy home. 🐾

3️⃣ Have you budgeted for the "unseen" costs?
A) I’ve factored in pet food and some fun toys! 🧸
B) I’ve factored in high-quality food, annual wellness exams, vaccines, preventative meds, and a rainy-day veterinary fund or pet insurance. 🩺

How did you do?
If you answered mostly B, your lifestyle is in a fantastic place to welcome a companion! If you answered mostly A, you might want to wait a bit. No matter where you are on your journey, we’re here to be your trusted partner in pet health.
