With today being the last day of September, we want to recognize that September is Animal Pain Awareness Month.

Pain can be part of many different conditions and can affect patients across every area of veterinary medicine. From emergency & critical care to surgery, neurology, internal medicine, oncology and rehabilitation, recognizing, assessing and appropriately managing pain is an important part of comprehensive patient care.

At Lakeshore Animal Health Partners, our multidisciplinary teams work together to identify the source of pain and develop an individualized approach to support each patient’s comfort and recovery.

This Animal Pain Awareness Month, we’re highlighting that pain management isn’t limited to one department, it’s part of caring for the whole patient.

The Emergency Department - What to expect. 🚑

Our Emergency Department is open 24/7. When you bring your pet to the emergency room, the first step is triage — a rapid medical assessment to determine how urgently your pet needs care.

Just like in human ERs, patients are seen based on the severity of their condition, not the order of arrival. Pets experiencing life-threatening issues (such as difficulty breathing, active seizures, collapse, severe trauma, or uncontrolled bleeding) are treated immediately. If your pet is stable, there may be a wait while our team focuses on critical cases.

In order to determine urgency of care, every pet will have vital signs taken, an initial triage examination performed, and brief history taken by a registered veterinary technician. This will allow us to provide a triage categorization.

After triage:
• A veterinarian will perform an exam when it is your pet’s turn to be evaluated
• We’ll discuss our findings, recommended diagnostics, treatment options, and expected costs before proceeding whenever possible

Emergency visits can feel overwhelming, but our team is here to guide you every step of the way. Caring for your pet safely and compassionately is always our top priority. ❤️ 🐾
