We are still heartbroken that, to this day, our beloved Monterini graduate Wi******er has not been found. We sincerely hope that he is safe somewhere and that one day we will know what happened to him. His story has reminded us how quickly a beloved cat can go missing and how important it is to know what to do from the very first hours. We put together this guide with practical advice on what to do if your cat ever gets lost.

If you are not completely sure that your cat actually got outside, search the entire house first: closets, basement, garage, shed, storage areas, behind furniture, under beds, inside boxes and anywhere else a cat could hide.
If you know your cat got outside, start searching immediately around your home. A frightened indoor cat often does not run far. Instead, they may hide in the first safe place they can find.
Check under porches and decks, underneath vehicles, in bushes, garages, sheds and other sheltered areas.

One of the most effective times to search is around 4 a.m., when the neighbourhood is quiet and there is much less traffic, noise and activity.
A frightened cat who stays completely silent during the day may start moving around when everything becomes quiet.
Take a bowl of dry food with you and slowly search an area within approximately 1 km of your home, periodically shaking the bowl.
Your cat knows that familiar sound very well. It means: โFood is being poured into my bowl.โ If the cat is nearby and has become hungry, this familiar sound may encourage them to come out of hiding.
Don't rush. Stop frequently, listen carefully and give your cat time to respond.

Put inside:

This can become a familiar, safe place for your cat to return to.

If you see your cat, do not run after them.
Even a very affectionate cat can become extremely frightened when outside and may run farther away if approached too quickly.

Prepare clear printed posters with a recent photo of your cat, their name, the area where they went missing, the date, your phone number and, if appropriate, a reward.
Take these posters to and ask permission to display them at:
veterinary clinics
animal shelters and rescue organizations
pet stores
local businesses
schools and community centres
other places where people in the neighbourhood regularly gather
Schools can be particularly useful. Children notice animals very quickly and often know what is happening in their neighbourhood. A child may recognize your cat because they have recently seen a new or unfamiliar cat at a friend's house. If you are offering a reward, make that information clear on the poster. A small reward can sometimes motivate people to pay much closer attention to cats they see around the neighbourhood.
At the same time, post the same information online:

neighbourhood Facebook groups
Instagram
local community pages
other relevant local social media groups
And don't overlook paid, geographically targeted advertising. A small Facebook or Instagram ad targeted specifically to the neighbourhood and surrounding area can put your missing cat's photo in front of thousands of people who would never see a regular post in a lost-pet group.
The goal is simple: make sure as many people as possible in the area know that your cat is missing. You never know who will be the person who recognizes them

They may use specialized cameras, humane traps, systematic search methods and other tools.
In some situations, this can be one of the best options, especially if your own searches are not producing results or the cat is extremely frightened.
You do not need to wait a week before asking for professional help.

If you have young children in the household, or any other situation where a door could accidentally be left open, consider getting a GPS tracker for your cat in advance.
A GPS tracker does not replace a microchip, but it can make locating your cat much easier if they accidentally get outside.
Always choose a cat-specific breakaway collar designed to release if it becomes caught.
