West Nile Virus season is officially on our radar for 2026!

At this time, there have been no reported positive equine cases of West Nile Virus. However, this is typically the time of year when infected birds begin to be identified, signalling the start of increased mosquito activity and disease risk.

Historically, clinical cases in horses start appearing later in the summer, often around July. Now is an excellent time to ensure your horse's vaccinations are up to date, including protection against West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

If you're unsure of your horse's vaccination status, contact your veterinarian to discuss the best plan for the season ahead.

Yesterday, Dr. Caldwell, Stefan, and Lexie had the opportunity to attend a Large Animal Rescue Course, an incredibly valuable hands on experience focused on real life emergency situations involving horses and livestock.

A huge thank you to Equine Guelph for organizing and running such an important course, and to Hamilton Mounted Police Services for their involvement and support throughout the day. It was an excellent experience working alongside first responders, instructors, and fellow professionals dedicated to improving large animal emergency response and safety.

We are grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and strengthening the skills needed to help both horses and their handlers in emergency situations.🚨🚒🚓

Some weeks in veterinary medicine are heavier than others.

This past week, we said goodbye to some truly incredible horses, and those losses are felt deeply by our entire team. While caring for horses is our profession, loving them comes naturally, and with that comes heartbreak too.

We grieve alongside their owners, and we carry each patient with us long after the appointments end. Thank you for trusting us with your horses through every stage of their lives, including the hardest ones. 🤍🕊

✨ Talk about a full-circle moment ✨

From spending time learning with our team to officially completing her clinical studies at the Ontario Veterinary College, Kelly is now preparing for graduation and her next chapter: a Large Animal Internship at OVC.

Seeing students discover their passion for equine medicine and turn it into a career is something we never take for granted.

We are so proud of you, Kelly, congratulations on this exciting next step… and on floating your own horses’ teeth along the way! 🐴🎓💚✨
