If you are a VERY experienced dog owner, are active physically and active with training and you want a pocket size, versatile working dog that will give you 150% in everything that they do and if you have the patience and know how to deal with terrier energy and attitude, I highly recommend a Jack Russell or a Patterdale Terrier.

If you don’t know anything about working terriers or have zero experience with them, aren’t dedicated to training and physical outlets, don’t understand that causing death and destruction is important to terriers, think you are somehow superior in intelligence, and don’t like to play with dogs, I highly recommend staying as far away from these two breeds as possible.

Jack Russells put the F in fun, Patterdales put the FU in it.

I try my best to set my dogs up to handle chaos. Especially the chaos of children. Yes I expect children not to just run up and man handle my dogs without asking, and I’ll certainly let tell their parents or the child themselves, that under no uncertain terms is this appropriate. But I do not expect them to stop being children just because my dogs are around. Children are unpredictable, fast moving, loud, they stare, they act weird and sometimes are very chaotic. If they ignore my dogs, but still act like nutty children, I require my dogs to be able to handle that situation in public spaces.
Handing chaos means of course correcting inappropriate behaviours, but a big part is also rewarding the attention back on the handler and ignoring the chaos around. We create this by introducing a marker word YES, and rewarding when the object of distraction (children) is looked at. In the beginning space is key, and being a far enough distance away to be both safe and successful helps tremendously. Eventually the dog pairs that the distraction (in this case children) signifies a reward is coming, and each time the distraction appears, the dog looks and then looks back to the handler. This process also helps to create a positive association with the distraction itself. This helps to build dogs that can handle chaos fluidly and with confidence.
Dogs should be taught to handle the chaos of children, and of society in general, especially those who live around parks or other heavily trafficked areas. And with the summer quickly approaching and the more people coming out from hibernation, what better time than now to begin the process of teaching your dog to better handle the world around them no matter how chaotc.
Happy training!

Did you know that it is completely unnecessary to put your hand to a dogs face to let them sniff you in order to get to know you. In fact, with certain dogs you are setting yourself up as a perfect target to be bit. Dogs don’t need your body parts in their face in order to get to know you, their most powerful sense can get to know you from many feet away. Double In fact, many would be much more comfortable if you didnt force yourself upon them but rather allow them to get comfortable without physical and spacial pressure, especially nervous/anxious dogs.
Just like I don’t need you to hug or touch me in order for me to get to know you, dogs don’t your appendages forced into their personal space in order for them to do the same.
Please keep arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times.
Happy training.

Puppies need sleep. Lots of it. On the whole, puppies who are out of control, overly bitey and over stimulated are often this way due to lack of sleep. Of course there are breeds that have more energy and are mouthy dogs as a rule, but even those puppies benefit from more sleep, not least. We have a tendency as humans, to think that we need to entertain and keep puppies out with us 24/7 when we are home. This is exhausting for both you and the puppy. Don’t be afraid to add more scheduled crate time to your puppies day. It will benefit everyone around, including your puppy.
Happy training!
